Just had confirmation that phase 2 of the EA's Barbel stocking of the River Aire will start again next week, they will work downstream from around Saltair dropping batches through Calverley, Rodley, Kirkstall and finishing on our waters in South Leeds. The Agencies Pete Turner and Pete Mishenko have been as good as there word again. Some of last years fish have been caught at Thwaites this season, and all the signs are good for the future. I will post pics when we put them in. Steve

Hi Steve, Out of interest is phase 2 a copy of stage 1 or are different age/size fish being introduced? Are stocks being introduced in the same place as stage 1 or are they attempting to spread the stock? What size range is introduced in a phase? Of those caught at Thwaites this season, in your opinion, how have they grown since introduction in 12 months?
Any info on the subject would be interestingly received

Zippy, The fish stocked last winter were very small 1oz to about 6oz with an odd fish slightly bigger, they were marked with a green spot and have been caught up to 8oz this season at Thwaites, I know one angler who caught barbel more than once this year from the fast water just below the dark arches biggest over 2lb he also had fish from the weir pool at the scout hut of over a pound. I have pics of a 7lb fish from Thwaites last year and know of another bigger one from the weir below morrisons, I'm guessing that these bigger older fish have probably dropped back from around the cup and ring one of the few places that barbel were caught before the official stockings of the last couple of years.

Mr k, Barbel are not cheap, the last ones bought for KP were 8'to10's and worked out about £8each. About 60000 elvers were released into the Aire at Rodley Nature Reserve, your Otters should be OK.
