Just 5 Saturdays and 4 Sundays left of the season, so as a newbie looking at all these great venues that I haven't tried yet I'm getting a list together of venues to fish up till 14th March ... definitely want to try at least a few of these:
* Pool for grayling and bit of lure work for pike.
* Ulleskelf. I pass it so often on the train and can't believe I haven't fished it yet. Do I have to wait for a good flush of coloured water to drop through? Do I need to read tide tables or anything to catch it right? Advice welcome.
* Hammerton. Want to fish somewhere new on the Nidd while the vegetation is sparse.
* Nidd Mouth. Have loved my two winter visits there though I don't think I've even had a bite yet! Want to go back for a whole day in March and rove the whole stretch of Nidd and Ouse doing float, ledger & lure ... about eight different swims ...all day long!
* Stocksbridge on the Aire - again while the vegetation makes it more accessible ...'cos I don't think this is fished much and can see it being a jungle in June.
* I suppose I should try for the famous Swale chub before the end of the season too. Maybe Helperby?
I'd be made up if I get the chance to tick off a majority of that list before the end of the season. Want to feel like I'm really using the yearbook. If I could get to any 4 of those 6 by the 14th March, I'd be well satisfied, and 5 would be brilliant. All dependent on conditions of course but I'll put this list up here to set myself the target.
Will also be having plenty of sessions on the Aire in Leeds too though, trying to hook these wary chub that seem so skilled in removing most baits from my hooks.
Trying some new territory on the Aire tomorrow.
Where's on everyone else's lists for the end of the season?

only done the Nidd up to the mouth but wanting to give the next stretch ago on the Ouse for the Roach and Chub.

going to give Topcliff and Asenby ago tomorrow with Lobworm on 1 rod and bread on the other.
not tried the Air around Leeds yet so hopefully before the seasons out I will get there.

What venues are on everyone else's lists for the end of the season? Well although I've only made it to one of my six venues so far (Stocksbridge) , at least I've fished another 3 venues that were new to me (another bit of the Aire, the canal at Woodlesford and the Calder yesterday). Looks like spring will be sprunging from the end of this week, so I'm now looking at fishing our rivers for at least a couple of hours almost every day for 8 days from the 7th to the 14th. Not bothered if I don't catch much - mainly I just want experience of the rivers - but might even try for my first barbel (without building up my hopes 'cos it looks like the rivers will continue to be very low indeed, right through to the notorious 14th March!) Anyone else got any particular end-of-season campaign goals?

There is no need to stop river fishing. Get fly fishing for trout. If you like to be mobile and have never tried it you will be in for a pleasant surprise.

Cheers Geoff - this will happen at some point, and we will be worm trotting for trout at Middleham this spring for sure, but having only just started to learn my basic coarse skills, and with no money for tackle at the moment, the fly fishing skills may have to wait a while yet. I'll look out for gumtree.com and bootsale bargains though.

How did you get on at Woodlesford Nige . . . Any good ? Not one of my finer performances Dave! (but thanks for your advice anyway!) Put it this way, if it hadn't been the day after one of my best ever day's fishing, it would have gone down as a disaster: wind and sleet and no joy in about 3 hours lure work around the locks etc, and my bail arm fell off my newest and (supposedly) best reel when spinning and the screw and washer ended up lost in the canal. In 2 hours feeder fishing I had just one probable bite and lost 2 feeders to snags. Two Sundays in a row now I've chosen my fishing venue 'cos my Mrs has been playing Sunday league football nearby- in Rothwell and Altofts respectively. (she's nearly 20 years younger then me), and she's joined me after losing both footy games and then she's not even had a bite either ... (though she did score goals in both games). Onwards and upwards.

Well I had been delegated Grandaughter sitting duties today so It was a choice of the park in the rain , feed the ducks in the snow or a trip to a nice warm B &Q B & Q it was .................. who needs parks and ducks to keep a two and a half year old entertained We rearranged a few more shelves and set off for Jungle Jims. Three hours in there and my knees were sore, 4 kids were now calling me Grandad and I had been on every slide and in every ball pool ten times over . We got home at four thirty and I must have been looking rather frazzled as the wife said "Why don't you go fishing for the last hour " Just after 5 oclock I cast the deadbait into the river I put the unhooking mat on the floor. pulled my coat up around my neck and laid back on one elbow , breathed a deep relaxing "Aaaaaah " and looked the float nestling in the slack on the far bank. I didn't even manage 5 minutes relaxation before the float started to gently wander , mmmmm . the current, wind , a fish ? It was moving a little too much so I wound down to feel for some resistance ...... and it was there A quick strike and she was on . A good fight finished off with an impressive tail walk ended with the Beast on the bank. poor lass had obviously been through the wars Looked like Mr Otter had given her a severe uppercut before snaffling half her tail Ah well, at least she managed to swallow my deadbait and she looked happy enough as she swam away. I reloaded and cast out again but it wasn't long before the cloud cover came in and I had to set off home at 6.15pm. Still , not a bad result and home in time to do the honours with Rumplestiltskin

So which 2 venues this weekend then as my 8-days-fishing-in-a-row challenge begins?
We're camping in Boroughbridge tomorrow night, So should it be the Nidd on the way there tomorrow or should it be Lower Dunsforth??
(Anyone been to Dunsforth recently? Does it get fished? And - equally importantly - are muddy anglers still welcome in the bar at the pub now that it's a posh restaurant??)
I've just spend a good hour collecting the fattest lobworms in north Leeds for the delectation of the perch, wherever we go.
Definitely the Swale on Sunday.

Fair chance of a barbel on the swale just before the season ends Nige! Good luck. Although spending the last 8 days of the season fishing, might be considered lucky enough!!!
Eddie.

Skip Bridge would get my vote Nige and you can get a nice brekky at the Cafe on e bridge tomorrow
