Are feeder floats any good for carp on the commercials? Which types have any of you had success with? Coil? Method shape? Big ones? Small ones? What type of feed mix?
Are they better on the big waters but too bulky for smaller ponds?
Or should I just forget these contraptions, use a normal pellet waggler and learn to be more accurate with my catapult?
Advice appreciated please for someone who's just starting out on the still waters. Not bothered about specimen size by the way.

hiya mate no dout people will have there own way of fishing commercials, most angler use pole as you need to keep the float bait and your feed in one place mainly in I would say 3 lines of approach.
1. very close to the island if you have 1, this can be shallow between 1 to 3 ft
2. in the middle normally in a channel the deep part nominally 5 or 6 ft
3. down the side where fish tend to feed later on in the day
other methods I would choose would be pellet waggler, if there up in the water. or method feeder tight to the island with a 4in hook length.
so to your question a feeder float I myself is for bigger deeper waters but that just me but some anglers may differ.

Thanks Johnboy,
Cos it's 8 weeks till the river season & 'cos I don't much like ledgering still waters (not enough action) ... and cos I don't have a pole and don't really want to learn to use one just yet ... I've decided to mainly concentrate on learning pellet waggler techniques for Moor Monkton etc, and my tackle budget might just stretch to a feeder float or two as well if I fancy a change (and like I say I'm not very good with a catapult yet).
So anyway, what does anyone think about feeder floats?

Hi nige, Long rod with a centrepin fished down the edge for me. Great way to catch commercial pasties or failing that the method feeder, you get some great wrap round bites with this style of fishing. Pellet wagler can be preductive but you need to feed consistently to get them going. I'm sure you'll nail plenty at mm even our forum masters manage a few. Check out moor monkton the video. Good luck Mick.

Had half a cup of tea left so couldn't resist it Nige , keep your money in your pocket and instead of going to the Car Boot this weekend meet up with your namesake , Nige Stickleback. He will show you the art of the catapult. He'll have you knocking the neighbours milk bottles over from 50 yards in half an hour

Thanks for the advice lads. Nobody recommending the feeder floats then.
I've also been experimenting on the Highbury pond bream with one rod cage feeder & one rod method feeder. So far I really don't like the short method feeder hooklength - both fish I had on it last night came in with the line around the base of their pelvic fins for some reason (no damage though). Two fish on that rod, four on the cage feeder rod with same baits and feeder mix.
Milk bottles eh? I remember those.

If you fished roundhay park when Leeds had it, you may have come across ex world champion Dave Thomas fishing his own design of feeder float. It was because magapults were banned at the venue and consisted of a bodied waggler, but the body was half cut away at the bottom and hollow. You could get about a dozen baits in it and it still looked like a proper float and behaved like one when fished, pity they aren't around now, would have been ideal!
Eddie.

I have many a good fish on cage feeder with a foot to foot and 1/2 hook link only good in shallow water to around 6 ft or so they say.

Can't really comment about using the Pellet Feeder Floats for Commercial Carp (pasties), but the smaller of this range have given me excellent results when fishing "on-the-Drop" for Rudd. Feeder FloatsEdit :- eddie Would these cover what you mean???....

Hey mate,, best way to attack a commercial,, from my experience,, is use a guru method feeder small one with a Preston c1 size 14 ready tied bait banded hook link,, use SPECIAL G ground bait and 6mm pellets and 4mm pellet,, 2mm pellet soaked for the method feeder and a nice mix up of special g,, cast to features far banks islands and so on,,, try keep accurate,, you'll have bites all day long,,, With pellet waggler buy a pre loaded one something with weight I used to use the Preston innovations ones they made a plop as they cast in,,, got the carp mad,,, Way to fish it is to try get the fish going in the water,,, by feeding 6-8 pellets at a time ACCURATELY little and often ,, then send pellet waggler out over the top,,, and boom you'll be in Size 12-14 hooks evan 16 work. Best with pellet banded,,, And on commercials you should really be using a 10ft rod as they are more accurate and better to play fish on,,, while sat down,,, the reason you won't be accurate is probs using a 13ft river rod maybe ?? Garblino rocket picker brilliant buy for commercials about £20 brand new,,, Had commy carp upto 15 lb on one of them it did take me an hour like but got it in All the best jimmy

Thanks everyone who's taken the time to respond - Eddie, Danny etc. Sprat - I'll try one of those for the rudd too - I assume you fill it with crumb plus just a few maggots ?

Nah, @nige_LS7. I tend to fill with Maggot, to get them coming up in the water. Basically, my attempts to "Spray'Feed" tight around my float/hook-bait is scandalous. My aiming leaves........... A lot to be desired....
