Don't know about Topcliff for fly fishing. Pool is a great place to fly fish for trout and grayling. Get someone to clarify the wading policy if fly fishing on leeds waters. This years trout fishing on all the yorkshire rivers has been great!

Thanks for the help I've fished only the Wharfe and had a greyling out and was thinking about the Swale just a bit of a trek that's all from me near Castleford. If I get chance I'll try at topcliff and pool. Thanks for the help.

Is this the Swale? I've only ever fished at cundal lodge farm so need to have a day or two on the topcliff section. Cheers for the advice.

If you're going to trek that far, you should try the Ure around Middleham one day (preferably one whole weekend to make it worthwhile), where there are various Leeds stretches spread over about 5 miles of beautiful river in the even more beautiful countryside, and come the 16th you can wade without breaking any Leeds rules (as you can at Pool, or Ramsgill or wherever). (I'm not a fly fisherman yet, but these places make me want to learn). A lot nearer to home, the Aire is more and more a trout river these days of course, and plenty of the free stretches have wading & fly potential....

Hi thanks for the advice. Somebody mentioned the Ure at Middleham could really do with a gilly to assist in where good to go. I keep thinking the river aire but for some reason it just doesn't give me the idea there is fish in it! I love barble fishing and can't wait for the 16th of June didn't realise you can't wade rivers until then? Fly fishing is awesome you should get involved nice and light tackle and beautiful country side what else do you need?!

Hi Tim. There is a lot of urban trout catching going on at the cutting edge of trouting these days. If you fancy a trip to the dales - and who doesn't? give me a message at gcblakesley@yahoo.com. Middleham would be good - happy to go but will be after 10 July if that is o.k - oh and I am no longer a member so would be good if you can get me a day ticket!

Thanks I might take you up on that offer. I've been and fished the river Aire from castleford to Allerton Bywater and it was a complete waste of time with the fly rod. I've fished some rivers in my time but that has to be the worst condition river I've seen!!! I'll keep you posted regarding Middleham. Tight lines.

You should have seen the Allerton Bywater stretch when I was growing up - it was utterly dead of all life. But it ain't fly water because essentially you need somewhere streamy and shallow for brownies. You need good oxygenation and invertebrate life . Forget the Swale until you get to Morton- random trout are caught below but the trout classification is to enable daft people to pretend they are trouting when ..ahem.. they aren't .
The best water on DT I know - and a long hike for you - would be Richmond AC water on the Swale - 15 miles of it I think. If you have a Bradford City book the lower Cod Beck can also be excellent.Bradford also has stretches on Aire and Wharfe- speak to Jim Munden (Memsec) who is the font of all knowledge. Also check out flyfishingforums - great advice there.
Many of the south Yorkshire rivers have been regenerated - if you can run to a day's guided fishing look up Stuart Crofts - he is a lovely bloke and a superb fisherman.
Warning- it is addictive and catches a lot more than trout. Including a couple of one offs I have caught bream, tench , carp , rudd, pike ,barbel , perch , brown , sea, brook and rainbow trout , salmon , grayling , dace , roach, bleak and countless chub on fly on fly - so far

Great to see talk about fly fishing, and to see that the removal of the wading ban on the leeds waters seems to have a lot of support. I am a member of both the clubs mentioned by our friend Grayson and other clubs. By the 16 of June the Mayfly hatch on the leeds waters will have peaked so unfortunately young and new fishers to fly fishing will have missed a very exciting time known as duffers fortnight. That said the river at pool is world class for fly fishing when caught right. I know that the club is predominant for course anglers, but if the pool stretch was maintained as a fly water this could become a premium water for leeds anglers and command a higher day ticket price for the visiting fly fishers. The free fly fishing on the don around Sheffield is great. A book entitled trout in dirty places gives information about free stretches of fishing. On a personal note after 45 years fly fishing I ticked one off my bucket list by catching a river trout well over 5lb. last week on a Yorkshire river. Hears to a good season for all anglers. Keep our rivers and banks clean.
