With respect for your understandable indignation, and that must have been a sickening sight, I think everyone on here knows how to handle barbel & you're preaching to the converted.

I was on Topcliffe this evening from 18.45 to 20. 50pm about 100yd below the weir & never saw this belly up barbel. I take it that it was spotted earlier than this?

It's fair play to report the sad sight of a dead barbel, and yes Nige I'm sure we all look after our quarry. But not all leeds members and no doubt some non members who fish topcliffe will treat the fish with the respect they deserve. Let's hope if the fish died because of bad handling or because it was released without being rested for long enough the angler responsible knows about it and looks after any future barbel he may catch.

I think the "KILLING BARBEL" title is a bit unfortunate and sets the tone of the thread, who says the fish originated from topcliffe? The proper handling and resting of fish, I hope goes without saying! It could after all be a natural death, I'm sure the high water we have had can be the end of an odd weaker fish.
Eddie.

I went fishing after watching pointless on TV that finished at 1800 I was at the top of the caravan stretch and the barbel floated past after I had been fishing about an hour The killing barbel was a bit drastic but yes I was annoyed after seeing this fish but it wasn't actually dead it was still gasping for air so hopefully it managed to wright itself If the river hadn't of been 4 foot up I'd of been in to help it

Sickening to hear this, some so called anglers just don't give a flying.
Go read up on a species before fishing for it, learn about what to do and what not to do, I've spoke to two anglers this year fishing for Barbel with 6lb lines, then I tell them I have 12lb on and they are shocked, no mate, that's the type of line you should be using I tell them, playing them hard and quick, you play a barbel on 6lb line and if you get him in he'll need atleast 10/15mins in the net to recover after.

Unfortunately I think some of the less experienced / less caring Barbel anglers are more focussed on getting cast out again rather than making sure the fish in the net is FULLY recovered before it is released. I've witnessed a Barbel go floating past before today and it made me feel sick to the stomach. If you can't take the time , no matter how long it takes, to make sure the fish is fully recovered , don't fish for them

So it seems to be fairly regularly that we get quite a lot of emotive complaints about some of those less ... let's say "aware" members ... if they are members... fishing at Topcliffe. And sometimes Asenby.
I'd say the culprits not the sort of people who tend to contribute to this forum. But maybe some of them do "lurk" on here, to find out where the fish are being caught?
The complaints cover: *Fishing out of season, clearly not really targeting trout. *Night fishing *Fishing on parish peg or casting onto parish peg *Litter *Dog mess *Uncivil behaviour & response to challenges. *Bad handling of fish
Personally I doubt that feedback here, least of all in committee minutes posted on here, would hit home and get anyone to think about changing their behaviour.
Does anyone have constructive suggestions as to how to achieve changes?
How for example could you draw attention to that video, posted above as a good example?
I would propose some of the following could be considered:
* Email newsletter to members including video links. This type of modern communication will happen one day on someone's watch, so why not sooner rather than later? (the text would not patronise the vast majority who are already handling the fish well, but would praise the good handling skills shown in (For example that video, or Tom's videos) and ask members to be vigilant... we are all bailiffs, etc.)
* Then there's social media - a club twitter account could work very well for this kind of thing... for those who wanted to sign up
* permanent links to such codes of practice prominent on club website - include video on barbel handling [YES THIS IS IAN MAC'S IDEA THAT I HAVE COPIED IN)
* More prioritisation of this kind of thing in yearbook & day tickets. And put it up front. Just because the badly-written old statutes of the club have always been on the first few pages of the book, doesn't mean they always have to be. They only serve to put people off reading other parts. Could include more educative illustrations along the lines of the "rodent-in-the-bait-tin" picture that is somewhere in the yearbook, not just the rules themselves.
* Possible sign board in car parking area of the illustrated style you see in nature reserves, written in an illustrated educational style alongside the more conventional "rules" approach.
* Emails would also mention that book checks will be forthcoming on all waters, members will be asked to leave club waters if they .... etc etc
*Most effective thing of all might be to find a very zealous and very local bailiff (what incentive could be offered to recruit one?) for Topcliffe and Asenby ... but I know they don't grow on trees.

Having an Email newsletter is a GREAT idea. Nige, the following is meant to be constructive, please view it as such :-)
You have a great ability to express yourself via the written word. You have angling passion in abundance. You have great idea's, and are not afraid to challenge establishment!
Would you not consider taking on this role ? Your postings are in-depth, informative and entertaining!
I have (after seeing the massive contribution) yourself and the other forum guys have made both in time and effort now decided I must throw my hat in the ring. Up until this time I have not been on any of the work parties, Saturday is my main day for teaching (and earning). But in the future I shall cancel my work and commit to help as others already have.
This is the limit of my contribution due to working mainstream and running my own business, I wish I could do more.
But, I have been humbled and so respect what you guys have done.
Please consider representing us via a news letter, I am sure the other guys on the forum would (just as I would) support you in anyway we could.
My respects and regards, deanos.

Thanks for the nice comments, but there isn't a role to take on ... if the Club wanted to move in that direction, then they could start to find a volunteer or volunteers for the role ...the collection of email addresses (optional) would have to begin at the sale of new yearbooks .... and in the yearbook you could also put details of how to submit your email address to be added to the list ...
