i fished knotford nearly 20 years ago, and loved it. i only feeder fished it conventialy, often blanked, but caught some lovely tench and roach. When it was coloured up with manure it was great fishing, but as it cleared itbecame harder and harder, I would love to think those big roach are still there, but maybe the way foreward is to run it as a specimen water, but beware the weed, wasnt agreat midlands tench water ruined by heavy lead/line bridgage, and ledgering banned

Paul,
I've already told you one, but I'll tell you again. The "30" that was lost, had two rigs in it mouth and a load o lead core tied to braid. the leads had ejected.
My question is.
Is this safe angling?
I fished Knotford a hell of a lot last year, mainly with Rich (breamboy) amongst others and found that the weed had infact not been as bad as previous years. As for 1 in 4/5 fish being lost in weed, really?

Boy oh Boy, are my products being deemed to be the work of the devil? The DyoFix is an algae and rooted weed growth inhibitor - it is not a weed killer or biocide. The words "growth inhibitor" gives a clue as to what it is doing, but to be a little bit clearer, it is slowing the growth down - not removing all food sources of mollusc, invertibrates etc. Water (particularly still waters) that have a large amount of rooted weeds that are left to their own devices will multiply very rapidly to the point where fish death will occur on a nightly basis due to the lack of oxygen in the water - during the day, over oxygenation will occur that is also bad for anything living in the water. Rooted weeds/plants with leaves on the surface are not affected, also marginal plants are near enough to the surface as to get plenty of UV light. While on site last Thursday, I was shown a small length of line found in the lake that is deemed to be "illegal" (for it's strength) and was told that some anglers resort to using this because the normal lines break when they get caught up in the weeds. Please correct me if I misunderstood this, but the use of certain types of line are unsporting? I know everybody can not be happy all of the time, but the committee has a responsibility to all of it's members and has to take action to satisfy the majority - democracy at work The DyoFix colour will be diluted by rainfall, so it is by no means a permanent solution, but I hope that you all feel the benefit of it's use this year. Around May/June time lots of fish were getting lost, but that was not due to the weed. It seemed that many people were losing fish for no apparent reason. I have my suspicions as to why it was but it certainly wasn't weed - as there hardly was any. It didn't really appear much at all until July time and as I and others have said repeatedly - it wasn't there in any huge amount anyway.
The thirty story has got me bemused as well, as the fish was not found tethered in the weed or due to a snag how do we know what effect the weed had on its very sad demise. My own guess whould be that it picked up cracked off rigs. I can't prove it, but from what I saw going on on there last year that would be my guess.
Far more fish were lost in the pads, or on that snag - the Dragons Back or whatever it is called. I also saw people get cut off on the bar off the spit as well and round that duck table thing.

You're right, Rich. The weed was a very late starter last year.
Maybe, the "30" was a tethered fish. It would have certainly still get tethered against any form of snag in there with the stupid rigs that people were using at the time.
In my mind it is just careless angling...a fish at all costs springs to mind

Fook me Mr Dyofix himself, not being at all patronising ;D
Im sorry mate but your little piece there has just made the whole Algae/weed thing seem even more pointless for me.I certainly cannot remember Algal blooms being a problem last year.So what on earth is going to be acheived by treating the water this year?
And if the blue mess only decreases with the natural water cycle, Id wager we will all be staring at it all year,Unbelievable!!

Why not just leave it alone?
Let it find it's balence......................It will have one if you leave it alone.
Place is a goldmine fish wise if you stop messing with it.

Quite right Mr Knowbody, what is the saying about wood and trees?
I do not think it is Leeds fault - they are doing what is asked of them - however it is the minority asking for these changes as the majority do not ask for things as they are happy with it as it is.

I think it's greatLeeds as a club are showing the iniative to aid with problems etc, but the majority (85%) of anglers that fish there don't see the weed as a problem.
They are good enough anglers to deal with it properly. It's the people that haven't fished it much, or don't fish it that are making suggestions that are not needed.
I just hope that when it doesn't solve the problem, because there is weed there already that hasn't died from last year. those same people aren't on at the club looking for more answers.

the guys from the club told me that a reason for doing this was because the lake is for everyone not just the carp lads. 95% of people fishing the place are carp lads thoe. They have not thought aout this at all. Why try make knotford into a nodi water when it is-was a thriving carp water? They are on their way to losing some good lads that fish on there.

When it is weed free, full of pasties and fuished by a bunch of numpties who couldn't catch the clap in a sleeper house, there is litter everywhere, and no one to take care of the place it, death rigs being cast out all over the shop and fish not being treated correctly it will become apparant as to what has been lost.
And with the greatest of respect, the only people I ever saw down there clearing litter, sorting out pegs, cutting the long grass in the locked car park...... (with the exception of the committee members) were carpers. If people love this water so much why aren't they down there helping us take care of the place? for my rambling, it is just sad to see somewhere edge towards that slippery slope..........

It's the "proper " anglers that look after the place and take their rubbish, as well as others home with them, and the so called "anglers that leave it...
Long may it remain a "proper" anglers water

I might be one of a few that fished the lake before leeds bought it, the lake was good mixed fishing with very little weed growth, if in places it became a problem it was removed by hand, outsiders would have loved to fish there, i remember angling times doing a feature about large still water chub and one of over five pounds been caught for them, we used to catch huge roach and perch even tho carp were there not many fished for them and the idea that one group would have had exclusive rights to fish for them would have been thought stupid and even more stupid for a club like leeds with thousands of members to be dictated to by a few that would like it to them selves, leeds were the only club in the area prepared to take a gamble and put there money where there mouth was to buy a mixed fishery for all its members, they used members money that wanted the same, that should not be forgotten, to say that catching stocked fish below ten pounds is not what you want to do just about sums things up, it would make my day and i am sure the members that provided the funds to buy the lake would be upset to read such comments. it is laughable reading those pretending to know and care about everything natural and complaining about a blue dye, are they scared it might help the lake return to what it was bought for, are they scared they might not get there usual spot because someone wanting to fish for something other than a twenty pounder got there first, knotford lagoon is a man made ex gravel workings not natural it needs managing, if years ago they had a dye that did what the dyofix man says and leeds hopes it does then i think we would have used it and would not be having this discussion now

i'm not saying that most of the lads are a danger with the weed and i'm sure they are more than capable of fishing with no problems but the problem is the 15% that have no idea and as it's a club water you will never get rid of that so measures need to be taken to protect the fish That 30 would probabaly got snagged up on any old snag but while there is lots of weed about it make the chances of it getting tethered a lot higher. AS for only the carpers looking after the place there is hardly anyone else there to tidy up because they cannot get near because of the weed. I know a few lads who have let there leeds books go because they can only fish it till may because of the weed As has been stated leed got this water as a mixed fishery and not a carp water so just catering for carpers (which i am one so i keep telling myself ) is not fair on the rest of the members . I have nothing against the lads who fish it at the moment as i've been told most are decent anglers but the monority that are'nt can spoil it for the rest with death rigs and the like. It looks like i might get thrown in next time i'm down there but i've only said what i thought was right but we'll have to suck it and see. The lads who are bothered about catching small carp need to raelly think is half an hours sleep really going to hurt that much

Hold on a minute I reckon we have lost our way a bit here The piont I made in the first place has nothing to do with "Carp anglers"having exclusive claim to the fishing at Knotford,in fact Im sure Ive already mentioned that in my opinion the lake should be a well balanced mixed fishery.Where "Old Pete" or "Young Bobbie" can both turn up and use whatever methods for whatever species they like. My only gripe was the way things are being done, not what or why they are.If the club had bothered to ask anyone who regularly fishes the place what they thought I dont reckon wed be having this discourse now.The only people Ive ever talked to who moan about the weed, leave litter, moan about not catching, vandalise the banks and generally act like tossers are never the lads you see time and time again. However these same voices are obiously being heard on this forum, and it seems are being listened to.
