i was reading jack lemmons article in tuesdays evening post, and is comments about lack of apathy and dwindling members.
first of all like jack pointed out anglers these days are only interested in commercial venues and bagging as many carp in a day as is possible, angling over the past 10 years as never been so popular because of the commercial venue and most of all the carp, where catching a 20lb fish is ten a penny now.
He points out the lack of apathy in the 2000+ members, and dwindling numbers, i would love to know what % of the 2000 members are just pleasure anglers, under 30 years old and only just started fishing in the last few years. or just buy the year book because theres a water near where they live.
also out of the 2000+ members how many are serious match anglers, it cant be that many, because in alot of jacks articles on a tuesday he complains about lack of numbers at matches.
its a sad fact these days but fishing has changed alot from the good old days ,anglers want instant action when they reach the bank, there not going to sit for a couple of hours without any bites, if leeds waters cant provide it theres plenty others about that can.
he goes on about the catterick complex, and how members complain about a100 mile round trip, but will travel down to the river trent, which is the same distance.
first of all fishing rivers is way down the list of new and pleasure anglers, i`v heard all the excuses too hard, too boring, no CARP. rivers out number the stillwaters on the leeds book.
also the catterick complex, alot of money has been spent making it a decent venue, but you ask the pleasure angler, why travel 50 miles upto catterick for an half decent day(and yes i have been and had an half decent day) when theres at least a 6 venues i could name within 20 miles of any leeds post code.
jack says catterick is popular with the locals and the geordies, well thats why theres a lack of apathy with members , too busy looking after the flagship water 50 miles away and neglecting the local leeds waters. i`v fished my local pond for a good few years now and seen it turned into a dumping ground,(things have improved this year though) and i`v only seen a bailiff once.
this is`nt a rant at jack, just to point out, most anglers outlook about the sport has changed over the years.
