Hi all,
I was thinking about going down and fishing the match lake at Catterick, can anyone tell me how it's fishing and best tactics to use. I last fished this over 2 years ago and they had a problem with losing water (there was hardly any in it) has this been sorted our yet?
Cheers

Hi Guy's,
The fish in Kendall Match Lake have their fads as most other fisheries but unlike most carp waters the carp in Kendall Lake often have a dislike for pellet raining down on their heads while they are feeding. It is best therefore to put in a pot of pellet and fish it out, then when you are sure there are no fish in the swim feed again. This only needs to be done for the first hour or so until the fish are settled. A good tip is that if you have been catching in one place and you stop catching, fish a few yards to the right or left and put in a small pot of pellet. You should start catching again.
Now that the water is cooling down the best bait will be 'thingyles in vinegar' and often with this bait there is no need to feed at all they just love them. Remember that if you miss a bite and the soft orange bit has been removed re-bait with a fresh one. Usually best fished in the deepest part of your swim.
These carp are completely mental and I have often been accused of feeding them on steroids. I would recommend a minimum of 16-elastic and 0.17 to 0.22 hook length with size 12 or 14-hook.

Thingyles!! It did it again, I mean those small mussel like things you get in jars that starts with 'C' and end in 'le'. It must be a safeguard to prevent people using naughty words.

Thanks for the info Gus, i was down there on Friday and the feeding you recommended worked a treat, had about 15 Carp all between 3 - 6lb! I wish i had seenv your info regarding line/elastic strenghts before hand as i got snapped about 4 times. They are really strong fighting fish. Had an excellent day.
Thanks

Hi Gus,
Hopefully you might manage to log on tonight, if so, I am coming up to fish the complex tomorrow. Question though - are you allowing keepnets in the 'Hall' lake?
Hopefully catch up tomorrow as I want to do a write up for the YF site.
Cheers, Carl. (Chegers)

Hi cheggers,
Sorry I was away in Ireland at the weekend for a birthday party so I probably missed you. However to answer your question yes you can use keep nets.

Catterick Lakes:
Thought this may be of help to anyone visiting Catterick.
Kendall Lake:
This is a moat type 53-peg match lake and is generally 13-metre wide and 4 to 6ft deep.
Pegs 1 & 2 are very good summer pegs and are quite shallow in comparison with the rest of the lake. These pegs hold mostly big carp up to 10lb and are best fished close in.
From peg-3 to 6 these are deeper and the fish have started to congregate here in winter. Lot of good roach here down the track for those purist anglers fed up of catching carp but carp are best targeted close in or on the far shelf.
Peg-7 has won a fair amount of matches fished across to the wooden pallet on the far bank.
Pegs 8,9 & 10 In the bay and it often pays not to fish right across but better about 3\4 over.
Peg-11 Very good peg fished across to the stick-ups on the far bank and close in to the willow on your left. You will need to beef up your tackle here to get them out.
Peg-12 Sometimes good with paste fished 45deg to the right down the track and has won an odd match.
Peg-13 Very good peg that has won many matches especially if peg 12 is not drawn. Fished to the gap in the willows on the far bank half way between peg-12 & 13.
Peg 14 is usually left out on matches
Pegs-15 to 20, Can be good sometimes and is a very sheltered area on a windy day. Peg-19 has won a few matches fishing across and close in to the right of the platform.
Peg-21 Has won a lot of matches fished over to the left and right of the gap in the trees on the island. However if peg-20 is not drawn fish right in front of that stand and keep having a look, at some point they will turn up here.
Peg-22 Has won quite a few matches especially in winter. There is a deep hole to the right of the peg quite close in at about 6-metre. However in summer when the fish are up in the water there is a small sunken island just past half way across and slightly to the right of the platform that can be very productive if there is a good ripple on the water.
Peg-23 Has won many matches fishing across to the bulrushes, if you can get them out, but if peg-22 is not drawn fish right in front of that stand as close as you can get.
Peg-24 can catch a few fish here sometimes but is best left out of the draw bag.
Peg-25 A few matches won from here but is often slow to get going. There is a small ledge at about 11-metre to the left of the platform in line with the large tree between peg 27 & 28 plumb up carefully.
Peg-26 some matches won from this peg especially in winter there is a deep hole at about 45deg. to the right of the platform at about 9-metre. In summer best fished two metre short of the far bank on a very flat level area the carp seem to like feeding on.
Peg-27 There is a sunken island slightly to the right of the platform at about 11-metre, which is a good area that carp visit often.
Pegs-28 &29 Often best fished down the track but can take a bit of time to get going.
Pegs-30 to 33 Very good pegs plenty of fish here across down the track or usually best close in.
Peg 34 Is usually left out if 33 or 35 is in the draw but is a good peg in its own right.
Peg-35 Holds the match record of 122lb and is best fished across to the willow on the right and the gap on the left far bank.
Pegs-36 to 40 Usually summer pegs that are quite shallow and you need to fish as close to the island as possible but can sometimes catch down the track.
Pegs-41 to 50 Very popular with pleasure anglers but have been disappointing in matches. Bream sometimes show down the track here and over the last two years the smaller carp have over wintered in this area.
Peg-51 A very good peg fished across to the large brown stone on the far bank.
Peg-52 Can be an absolute flyer at the right time of year in high summer it is unbeatable fished to the left and right close in at four metre but hold on tight these fish are completely mental.
Peg-53 usually left out of the draw as it spoils peg 1 and 52 if included.
Hope this is of use to someone.
Kind Regards
Gus

Cheers Dom

Nice one Gus, you have obviously put a lot of work into that peg-by-peg breakdown. I'm sure a lot of visitors will find it useful. Well done.
