I think all the weirs were built for man's benefit rather than the wildlife. A weir is a right pain in the ass' if you are a migrating salmon or trout so it's great news we understand this and maybe we should try to scrap 'em all - no fish pass just get 'em out - no need to consider power generation at topcliffe - best knock it down? I sort of understand what your saying gcb,
but don't some weirs help the flow of the river or would it not just be a canal mate.
or am I totally wrong here.
P.S. can someone clarify this for me please

Well guys I made a right blunder with the weight of the Perch,
it was actually 1 1/2 Kgs not 1 1/2 lbs so in respect it was actually around 3.25 lbs in weight what a fish cant believe it.

Can't help but notice some stupendously good match results for perch the last couple of weeks on the Ouse. Like 51 fish for 46 pound
Looks like the perch have really woken up and are feeding up prior to spawning (if I'm not mistaken the predators tend to spawn quite early?)

The problem with removing the weirs Is that they have In most cases been there a very long time and the rivers have evolved to compensate for the weirs, the EA had plans to remove weirs on the Derwent but there trials caused havoc with land slips along the riverbank. Not sure but I would think the plans have been put on hold. Ok In some cases the removal of weirs on some rivers has not caused problems but as Is the case with the Derwent It could cause big issues with bank slipage and erosion.

The Water Framework Directive means that all obstructions - weirs etc- have to be made fish friendly for migrating fish. Which means all fish , not just silver ones and eels are especially catered for . There is an ongoing programme to carry out such work; the next weir downstream from Topcliffe has already been replaced .
Stonking perch...

I might be wrong, but I have always thought the weir at Topcliffe to be the last one downstream. Not aware of another.

We need a boundary fence to separate the pp from the end of our length, the path across the ditch looks very well worn. And I doubt it's leeds anglers poaching the pp hopefully it's only the local dog walkers.
