Was thinking of fishing Ulleskelf tomorrow Saturday( OK that's today already really) but just checked and it's spring tide tomorrow.
Not been before but am I right in thinking a big spring tide could mean the river rises as much as 9 foot in a couple of hours? And then falls more gradually over about the next 10 hours?
So is high tide at Ulleskelf about the same as at Naburn Lock (so I can use the tide info for there) ? Looks like that will be about 11.40 am tomorrow (from Wharfe mouth to Ulleskelf is about the same distance as Wharfe Mouth to Naburn ).
Does this mean that that basically tomorrow's not a great day to fish Ulleskelf?

For high tide at Ulleskelf look at the EA river level for Fleet pumping station this is near to where the Wharfe and ouse merge. Look at the graph, it will look like a saw edge (peaks and troughs). High tide tomorrow look to be about midday, if you're float fishing don't be surprised to see your float moving upstream and as Rushy said 3-4 foot extra. High tide is a good time for Barbel I have found, good luck. Keith.

Thanks for all the replies folks - I went elsewhere in the end when I saw the wind was going to get up today too - not much shelter at Ulleskelf - glad to hear it's only about 3-4 foot max even on a Spring Tide. I will try it soon.
Thanks Keith I will use the Fleet Pumping Station graph.

Skelf is one of my favourite venues, the tides do have a great influence on the fishing. I have seen a 6ft tide in the railway field! But as you move up the length the tide has less of an influence. If the river has been low for a while, a good tide stirs it up a bit. I have sat without a bite for hours, then the river backs up, two barbel in two casts! The place looks featureless but it has it's hot spots!

there's gona be plenty of water smashing through at Skelf today - high tide (not a biggie) about 5pm too... apps.environment-agency.gov.uk/river-and-sea-levels/120697.aspx?stationId=8078Not been before but been wanting to fish Skelf for ages so if anyone has any advice on pegs with good slack chubby water at Skelf when it's racing through, please p-m me before 11 a.m. I tried a very fierce Aire yesterday and just couldn't find any slack where i was so couldn't hold bottom nor cope with the debris coming down On train & foot today so gona walk the whole length hopefully & round via Tadcaster town bridge as well to fish the Mucky Hole length if it's the last day we have the rights to it!! EDIT - I've mis-read my own scribbled version of the train timetable that i scribbled 2 weeks ago... good job I realised now before I set out ... pathetic service to Skelf can't get me there in time for enough fishing ...looks like it's bus to Taddy today so if I fish Skelf length it'll be top end near Taddy water .... any tips for slacker water??

It was fine, just a couple of feet up and plenty of creases and slacks on the bends. Just walk along the flood embankment to see tons of likely spots. Holding bottom in the full flow with 2.5 or 3oz (whereas even 4oz couldn't cope on the Aire on Friday). that doesn't mean I caught anything though. Fished about 6 pegs between numbers 6 and 16 from 1 pm to 4.45, then went round via Tadcaster Bridge up the other embankment to the Mucky Hole (just to I'd fish it while it was in my Leeds book). And blanked there too.

Maybe a silly question but how does the tide affect the Pike fishing? I plan to try there this weekend or next and have never fished there before.
I've looked over the previous posts and looked at the Fleet Pumping Station and noticed the level can differ by 1m in 6 hours. If say for example high tide was tomorrow at 12pm, would that mean the level would be 1m up if I go there a few hours after? How long does it take for the tide to affect the river? Sorry for all the questions but I know diddly squat about tidal stretches.
I just don't fancy wasting one of the last weekends there if the water is like chocolate and racing upstream! Especially after looking on the maps and seeing how far the walk is.

Especially after looking on the maps and seeing how far the walk is. Fleet is a long way downstream from Ulleskelf which means the level change will be much reduced and will also occur some time later as the effect is delayed the further you are upstream. Whilst I don't have data for Ulleskelf itself on the Tidal Trent for example the high tide in Hull occurred some 4.5 hours earlier than at Sutton-on-Trent and a 7 metre tide in Hull equated to 1 metre at Sutton. However the amount of water trying to get down the river will also have an impact, it's all about flowrate and volume.

The tide can be anything from unnoticed to 3ft plus sometimes even more. Pike fishing, try Kirby wharfe on the bend where the wires cross the river, good spot for pike!
