My Mrs has to be in Altofts this afternoon - thought I'd try the Calder.
It's a longshot this (as i'll be setting off in about 2 hours) but anyone ever tried anywhere downstream of Wakey? Any free fishing? the nearest to where my Mrs will be is Mirfield AC no day tickets, then i see there's a farm lake fishery - Birkwood Farm that does day tickets for the river as well - but was hoping for some free fishing
Anyone know anything about Kirkthorpe weir area ? Possible access on foot to south bank path past half moon lake and under the railway? Or from the wetlands park on the north bank? I never mind walking miles to find decent spots.... and that area looks like this time of year (and low river levels like they are now) just might be the only time access is possible.
Long shot I know but any info gratefully received.

Well, after just one bite (snatched at it as I was so glad to get it during some particularly fierce cold rain into me face) and zero fish, some might say that was a failure.
But I like rambling along riverbanks almost as much as I love fishing, and I love fishing more than I love catching fish, so well there's 5 swims I've fished on a river that's new to me, with less than 2 weeks left of the season. So, errm, that's a result, eh? Strange stretch of river though. Hard to find any flow. Most of the bends where you'd expect some undercut and flow seem to act like they've already become oxbow lakes.
Didn't make it to the faster stretches I mentioned near Kirkthorpe weir. Might have to wait till next winter that.

Fished this area quite a bit last year from below kirkthorpe weir down to welbeck tip bridge, had numerous trout to 3lb grayling to 1lb some decent bream to 5lb and chublets a chuck the best spot is probably the old lock gates below the weir good flow and solid flat bank to fish off also directly under the tip bridge when the rivers down casting downstream to the treestump got busted off numerous times by something on 12lb line assume a big carp or barbel. Parkin in kirkthorpe church carpark godown halfmoon lane, right up footpath behind church follow to small train bridge then left through the bushes at first opening then straight to river to get to old lock gates.

Brilliant info this mate - did you fish it in summer? Will I need my machete there in June?

Was carp fishing halfmoon last year so only did a couple of sessions and access is fine in summer the balsam gets pretty high but theres a path through it. if you keep going down the bridlepath after the train bridge you come to a big hump near the pipe bridge/gas box thing, theres a hole in the fence there(big hole can barrow through it) the good paths down there just slightly longer walk. Also if you keep following bridle path past small pond(great tench and wildie fishing) for about 3/4mile you get to welbeck tip bridge steep bank down to river it and only fishable when rivers low but nice bit of flow good mixed fishing casting cage feeder downstream with maggots pellets groundbait on an evening its class

Heard they taken over 3 ponds but dont know why and nothing has been done with it as regards the river its on welbeck tip land and there is no proper access so that should be still ok to fish

Great info this. Love a bit of free fishing that you have to make a bit of effort for. So the old lock gates were for a little canal that used to cut out that whole horseshoe with the weir before the navigation was built? So this on the inside of the bend just 100-200 yards after the railway? [EDIT - to answer my own question, I found this page telling me all about the cut - built wow, fully 315 years ago - scroll half way down for photos of the canal masonry... www.stanleyhistoryonline.com/Stanley-Ferry-History.html ] and as for the 'under bridge' swim, that must be just before the Yorshire Field Sports stretch begins then? Don't want to encroach on their stretch when you look at all those big guns and longbows they've got there on their website !

Yeah half moon lake is part of the old canal where the gates are coming from, yeah the peg under the bridge is at start of fieldsports stretch loads of good fishing in normanton area. Not having a car makes you find and appreciate the waters round you. Had carp to 20+ pike to 20+ bream to 6lb eels to 4lb perch to 3lb trout, grayling, wildies. People just cant be a***d putting the effort in to walk to these spots and the great fishing they have to offer
