Well there had been an overnight frost , there was a cold North , Westerly , Southerly breeze blowing in from the Pacific and the air pressure was high (or was it low ? ) anyway, the conditions were not looking good and the doubtful dozen explored many more excuses whilst waiting for the draw.
First into the bag was our illustrious leader Mr Park , Peg 14 !!! You’re having a laugh , only the best peg on the lake. After several independent examinations of the draw counter it was agreed there were no nicks or other signs of draw rigging on it , so with a few shaking heads and sucking of air through teeth it was agreed he could keep the peg.
After 6 more draws we nearly came to fisticuffs as 3 of our less well sighted entrants all claimed to have drawn Peg 7. On closer inspection it was revealed they were looking upside down at the back of the draw counter which all have an L on them for Lapwing
And so the draw took place and the teams were.
A – JOHNBOY – SHANE – RUSHY
B – EDDIE – BRENT – TROUTMAN KEN
C – MR PARK – VICE PRESIDENT PAUL – CABBO
D- STEVE53 – NAT – ANDY P
Vice President Paul was immediately on the phone to the wife
“ Hi love, we’ve just done the team draw and the takeaways on me tonight. Grahams drawn the best peg on the lake, I’ve been practising every day for 6 weeks and Cabbos already got a Forum AC Trophy on the mantelpiece , its going to be a walk in the park “
So off we sets to our pegs and in my locality I had Shane to the left , with Graham next to him and Ken at the side of Graham. The whistle went and there were 12 splooshes of varying ferocity. Almost two minutes later there was an echo round the lake , got one , got one , got one , got one . . . . looked like we could be in for a good day
And then that was it ..................... nobody could get a bite ................ well okay I got a little Tench
Shane was struggling away from his usual Topcliffe haunt and had started asking for Grahams advice
And it seemed to go on for ages until the fish started to move a little bit and Johnboy had a cunning plan
VP Paul was having serious doubts about treating the wife to a takeaway
Cabbo who was pegged next to me had been quiet all morning and could be heard muttering something under his breath about the River Nidd and Skip Bridge or something
Steve 53 (a late entry to the match ) was tucked quietly away at the top of the lake and word soon spread that he was onto the fish at 16 metres. Not bad for a novice (so he told me when he asked if he could come along )
Eddie had been very quiet but after a hectic tussle which he thought might get him up the pecking order it all went pear shaped
Shane had got fed up with the meat approach and was thinking of other options
Andy was dreaming about big Carp and weeks gone by
Brent was not having a good day
But Nat was
It wasn't until half past one that I remembered Shane was in my team and with Johnboys Gudgeon shoal on the move we had to do something to stop the rot. Shane had only had two Tommy Ruffes and a Bleak (well that's what he said they were and who am I to spoil his illusion I gave him a little advise , tweaked his tackle (cos he likes it when I do that ) and low and behold he was soon into his first Carp
And Ken , well I think the stress of watching the last few hours of Shanes antics had just about finished him off . Especially has Shane now seemed to have ditched his 16mm cubes of meat, liquidised bread in a 4 ounce feeder and was casting to where the Carp were shouting at him
Graham was having a grand day and had netted himself a few Carp and a lovely net of Ide and skimmers (unlike his team mates )
And so it wasn't long before 4pm arrived and time for the big weigh in.
The results in reverse order were da da da da da da da da da

Third - Graham - 35-5
Second - Rushy - 43.13
