Someone in another thread the other week said they learned to fish at Highbury pond in Meanwood, and right now it's helping me improve my skills a bit too. Because it's so near to me and I often pass it walking the dog, and because over the years (when I wasn't fishing meself) I've heard reports of its decline, I've underestimated it & taken it for granted. This wasn't helped by fishing it at the wrong times last winter. The thread title is because there was a hailstorm the first time I went there in January! Plenty of small silverfish - including a variety of hybrids - but that got a bit boring quite quickly for me. But recently, with sunny evenings, the spring appearance of lily pads, etc, and after I'd cleaned up a bit of litter around the pegs, I've started to appreciate its charms more. I've figured out where the better bream hang out and what bait they (and the tench) can't resist. So anyway, I wasn't too bothered when I heard from the club office when I popped in for the key to other venues that Leeds & D AAA are letting this venue go. It's local for me so I'll make sure I can fish it legally whoever has the rights... but I dunno, some might regard it as pity that the club are letting go something that's a decent facility in Leeds itself (would be good for training the next generation of Leeds anglers for example - just the right size). ... it's certainly a d**n sight easier to catch decent fish there than it has been in my 2 visits to Sandwath with that key!!

I recently retired and decided to join LDASA after an absence of 40 years. I also purchased a key so I could fish Knotford, Sandwath etc which I never fished back in my younger days. Can anybody provide any tips for these waters. Also regarding Highbury Pond, is still a Leeds water? It's in the handbook. Thanks

Hodgy I would like to be positive but as they don't offer suitable match venues Sandwath and Knotford have been sadly neglected by leeds and only worthy of ' pleasure fishermen' and some keen carpers at Knotford if that floats your boat.

Cheers Mouldy. I went to Knotford today and blanked but so did all the "keen carpers" as you call them. Might give it another chance when the weather warms up as some of the guys there today said there are big tench and bream to be had. Any news on Highbury Pond please?
