I joined the club to fly fish the rivers for trout and grayling. The club rules do not allow anglers to wade, so this in affect makes fly fishing in rivers almost impossible. If this rule is to protect fish, then why do they allow trout and grayling to be killed?. Do you think sensible wading in trout waters is o.k?

I don't fly fish but it does seem like the rule needs to be re-written with stated exceptions to the closed season no wading rule: Ramsgill, obviously (other clubs' stretches there are fished by wading), and Middleham almost as obviously - could even define which particular stretches at Middleham.

Yes wading is allowed from 15 June but only for 1 yard so that a keep net can be positioned out in the water. Other than that at present no other wading is allowed. This was confirmed to me by a official of the club. The club is fortunate to have some excellent fly water. This is a great asset to the club and if some of the rules of the club where adjusted accordingly would attract other members to join. A no kill policy and de barbed or barbless hooks for fly fishing is now standard policy for most clubs.

I'm not certain but I would imagine the no wading rule is about not disturbing spawning grounds for coarse fish. Regards Mick.

Try rule 16 page 26 and no I was not that official That's in the Match Rules section so presumably doesn't apply if you're not fishing a match Graham ?

Just quoting where to find what was previously mentioned Fair enough but it's pretty obvious from the original post this wasn't about match fishing although of course we've no idea how the question was posed to the 'official' so it's either a misunderstanding or mischievous, I'll let the audience decide

But not from 16th June which I quoted in my original post so my statement still stands i.e. you can wade more than 1yd during the coarse season if not fishing a match
