Well my two previous visits to the canal had resulted in one Bream and 2 Perch so I thought yesterday had to be third time lucky.
My confidence was somewhat buoyed by my meeting with my old Barnbow buddy John P during my last visit.
He runs a lovely lake at Spofforth (well worth a visit if you’ve never fished it ) www.sunrise-lakes.co.uk/ and he used to be a half decent angler but hes knocking on a bit now. He did still manage to give me a couple of helpful tips such as which peg to fish, where to cast, what hooklength to use, what size hook, what bait and how to strike. The rest of it I worked out
for myself.
I arrived at half two after a morning walking the Nidd in anticipation of the glorious 16th. Got the feeder rod set up and whacked in 10 feeders of groundbait laced with dead reds , pellets and corn.
Settled myself down and attached the hooklink with three dead reds on and whacked it out to exactly the same spot as I had put the loose feed in (well , it was within
20 foot or so and it was very windy )
Tightened down to the feeder as it settled on the bottom and almost immediately the tip dropped back. Not exactly a Barbel bite but worth striking at me thinks …………… and we were in
business.
Not a bad start 4 and a half pound
Reloaded the feeder and went back out again to exactly the same spot (okay , so it was twenty five foot to the left and ten foot further out , but its not precision engineering
is it and fish do swim . . . and it was VERY windy )
No sooner had I had chance to start sorting through the end tackle in the pocket of my Barbel Roving vest while I waited for a bite, than the tip dropped back again
Bream number two in the net . . . could be a good session this thinks me and then my phone went and the conversation went something like this
“Na then Rush , I’ve booked the squash court for 6 “
“ What squash court – I’m fishing “
“ We said we would have a game Tuesday at 6pm “
“Yea, next Tuesday ya muppet not today “
“ Ah well, I’ve booked today so see ya there, got to go" and he hung up
That old classic thought went through my mind which
translated into an anagram comes out something like FFS
Depressed but unperturbed I reloaded and was soon into a rhythm. The fish seemed to be moving about a bit which was rather fortunate as it
tied in with the accuracy of my casting.
I managed to wangle out 8 Bream , 2 Perch and a Roach before 5.30pm arrived all too soon.
And so it was
off back up the A1 to charge round a squash court like a
lunatic for 45
minutes in the sweltering heat when I could have been
sat by the canal on a
lovely spring evening putting more Bream in my
net than I could possible lift
out of the water
Ah well, theres always next time
Just hope Jimmy
doesn’t find out I’ve been Bream fishing without him ,
he’ll be
devastated
