So Hammerton Mill top end doesn't get fished much?
is this mainly cos of parking and walking?
Does this mean that in the right swim the fish will be a bit less clued up? Or does it just mean they will be underfed (and so not hanging out there at all)?
I was just thinking that cos this summer I may well be using Hammerton station a lot to access my fishing, I could make it a bit of a 'project' to get to know that end of the Leeds water (goes without saying that I'm looking at barbel, chub & perch, and may occasionally get the lures out for the pike)
on the other hand I'll be taking me bike on the train, and even on me bike I can probably get from the station to Skip Bridge, over the horse field and under the railway as quick as I can get from the station to the Mill, so am I better off fishing down there where more anglers will be feeding them?

Not fished it for a good few years now and one hell of a trek through the undergrowth but as always it's about swim choice. Pick the right one and the fish are there. I had the benefit of fishing it many years ago when it was match fished on a weekend so not as overgrown and I got to know various productive swims. Biggest problem is finding them again due to them being overgrown and my memory fading. I would go for under fished and overgrown against fed regular and overfished every time !

I know someone who fishes it Nige Some cracking swims. It's easy walking down from the parking to,the mill and you normally meet the locals dog walking. They are a great benefit as they keep a path along the river side. The problem is getting to the river and it's definitely a balsam bashing exercise to get to the pegs . . . Especially if you don't know where it's worth beating the balsam I think there are a couple of matches booked early season so hopefully the clubs fishing will beat the wayndown. Failing that I might have to try and sort a balsam bashing session out with a few strimmers. Definitely worth a go,but it does need a few sessions to get to,know the length. Don't bother going past the first field . . . It's like the Amazon down there

Thanks for the advice chaps. I'd be up for taking part in a working party that end, even if it was just 3-4 of us with a couple of strimmers, etc. Might even have an early night the night before. Also found this excellent little perch fishing report from last year leedsdasa.proboards.com/thread/2295/river-nidd-hammerton(there were some good contributions from that Roundhead1642 last year, shame he stopped posting)

Nige check out johnboys first of the season thread then follow that up with rushy's horseshoe bend and beyond thread these should give you an insight into hammerton mill lengths. You will be alright on the bike as this will negate the walk from the cricket pitch where the parking is, you may even be able to cycle along the bank, but only in the 1st field

Thanks mate - two epic threads that show me I am standing on the shoulders of the giants of Nidd strimming. The depth of info to be found in old threads on this board never ceases to impress. Much respect for all that effort last year. Let's go again!

Nige its a great place to fish and you don't see many anglers down there as they find it to far to walk, but if you pick the gear right 1 rod reel landing net and a rucksack on your back you cant go wrong ask Rushy.
and yes you will be fine taking your bike down there so it would be easier for you.
I started my first river fishing down there with epic Barble, Chub and nice Roach.
most of the swims are just a underarm flick under the bushes either side of the river, there are as Rushy says some nice swims just after the weir but it can be like a jungle at times.
ho Hammerton memory's of been a kid.
