Horses for courses !!! On the narrow rivers nid or dearne or suchlike I wouldn't use the bait runner but anywhere that allows I would simply because it's safer in my opinion especially if two rods are being used . I would ask anyone who has lost a rod to a barbel to think carefully about what you can do in the future to prevent it happening again because it's got to be the worst way to go if you are a fish towing an Avon quiver about till exhaustion finally kills it . For me there's no better sound than line being stripped from the reel by a big barbel which is an added bonus ,,,,,, You've obviously not heard the sound of Cabbos wallet opening then Chris to buy a round ........................... no , me neither That's because your bloody deaf mate !!!! Anyway never mind looking out for my wallet keep your eyes on your rod mate ,good advice from Mr Cabbo as always Mr Rusty.

If am fishing owt snaggy or fast[60-70% barbel pegs prob]big line with the smallest amount of give in case of a mega lunge,do use baitrunner some times only on a clear swim with plenty of rod room, never use an alarm tho,can here it whirring[great sound]Remember once years back on wetherby weir hearing a strange sound whilst putting other rod away,it was me old mitchell backwinding[nice barbel].tho touch legerings the best, some tiny "bit" plucks produced some cracking chub and barbel when hit

I use baitrunners if fishing two rods, be crazy not to.
But only tend to use one rod these days on all the Yorkshire rivers, bar the Ouse, so stable rod rest (a rear one that grips), baitrunner off and watch.

My stats have changed, as yesterday I got done on the Nidd fishing in a clear mid-river spot where I thought I'd have a few seconds to spare once the baitrunner had clicked off. The clutch was looser than I thought, too loose, and I just didn't tighten it fast enough, though this was due to me being slow to react, rather than the fact I'd had the baitrunner on. It was all about that 'downstream head of steam' that someone mentioned, the fish meant business, and before I knew it we were locked up in the roots.
Clutch and quick reaction issues, but I'd still use the baitrunner.
