Had a session on the wharfe this evening and after blanking on the nidd and at this venue on Monday evening, I was half expecting another, they say these things come in three's!
So a bit of thought and maybe head for some slightly deeper water, especially after noting mortias post regarding his session last night. At the river and the flow is very slow in the deeper pegs, so I walk back up stream until I get to the peg mortia was in and at least it had a bit of pace!
But I'm in two minds now, then I see a barbel flash in the swim and the decision is made, mortias swim it is!
A couple of hours fishing sees the boilie rod tap once or twice, but nothing positive develops. So drastic measures are called for and I turn my back on the rods to answer the call of nature, glancing over my shoulder I notice the rod tip bouncing a little, but nothing spectacular. With the rod still trembling I pick it up and its snagged solid, I pile on the pressure and it pings free and the rod hoops over and a proper barbel battle begins. After a little while my prize is in the net and I was pleased to see the safety lead clip had done it's job and jettisoned the bomb in the snag.
5lb 6oz and a bit of an old warrior with a bit of dorsal fin missing, but very welcome!
Rods back out and something catches my eye, on the other bank two deer come charging out of some trees, run 100yds then jump into the river and cross to my bank and quickly disappear! You don't see that everyday.
A bit later and the other rod is away, this time a typical barbel take and after a fine fight a second fish of 6lb 4oz and another old soldier, with a bit of tail damage!
It was now beginning to get dark, so time to pack up and head for the car. Gear in five past eight and just about dark and a car arrives in the car park. I'm thinking who the hell would turn up to start fishing at this time! Hi Eddie done owt, just got grandkids to bed and thought I'd get an hour in, you guessed it " the rushmeister", bonkers!
Eddie.
