Well after a few hard sessions on the Swale, only had about 5 barbel from over a dozen attempts this year, the lord rewarded my efforts with a special fish. Caught in a swim I'd blanked in twice before but it just looked so right to me I decided to give it another go, contemplating a move after 2 hours I was finishing tying a rig when I glanced up and saw a massive knock on the rod top, so I quickly try to finish my rig to be ready if it developed into a take but 20 secs later the baitrunner rips off and the rod hits the ground paying out line under the savage take, I was fishing at 40 yards downstream and the fish had added 20-25 yards to that on the first run, when I engaged it, it was 60+ yards thankfully away from the willows and in the middle of the river. After 15mins, this was the result. My previous PB was 11.04 from the Trent in 2008, when I glanced down into the net I thought that's beaten my PB surely, it was a beast and I was buzzing, and off the Swale too. I rested it for 15mins, unscrewed the net to weight it on some new Korum digital scales I'd only used twice since getting them and it went 14.10 in the net, wow, so what does this new net weigh then, I reweighed the fish twice more and I kept getting 14.10 so rested the fish back in the margin for another 10mins until I was sure she was ready and off she went, now I could weigh that net, it went 1.7, making the fish 13.3! Still can't quite believe it, I may never catch a fish that size from a Yorkshire river again.

What a fish - congratulations! Think it might be quite a while before any of us betters that in Yorkshire! It would be a river record on the Ure, the Ouse, the Nidd, the Derwent, the Aire, the Calder or the Rother! the Swale is one of only 4 Yorkshire rivers have produced well verified bigger fish according to The Barbel Society records page. www.thebarbelsociety.co.uk/index.php/resources/river-records/

If that fish gets on the munch in these next couple of months I don't think it will be far off, it was rock solid muscle, I checked it's mouth, clean as a whistle, may never have been caught before. I was lucky, because i was going to meet someone for a session on the Wharfe but they could not make it so I went to the Swale instead, decided in the car on the way, nearly went to the Wharfe by myself.

Thru the day Caught at just past 4 in the afternoon, I don't mind trying swims again I've blanked in before, I'm use to blanking on the Swale this season, might as well blank in a swim that looks favourite out of the rest. Another 30mins and I'd have moved, Lady Luck was in play that day.
