Closed face reels are popular with lots of anglers on here for trotting rivers and that got me wondering which one is the best tool for the job ?
I suspect one manufacturer wins hands down but lots of makers have had a go at developing them , DAM,Ryobi,Mitchell,Shakespeare,Daiwa amongst many.
Which ones did you have ? And were they any good ?
Mick.

My first closed face reel was bought to replace, or should I say just for stick float fishing, instead of my Mitchell Match reels. I went to the tackle shop to buy the in vogue ABU 501, but for some reason purchased the 506 instead, faster retrieve I think. Later I bought the Daiwa ( was it called harrier? ) and also the new version of the 506, but the simplicity of the single pin pick up in the original couldn't be beaten, the double pins in the later two reels not always popping in when pressing the front of the reel and a pain having to listen for a double ping to be sure. Inside the 506 there's not much going on simplicity itself really ( wonder why they were so expensive? ), but once the drag control on the handle is tightend rock solid with a pair of pliers, so it back winds properly, it's still the reel I use today! I still have my other reels including the Mitchell's plus a couple off 300's and is it a 400 or 440, can't remember without checking, that I used for the ledger rods and even my pike fishing.

Nige , is that the green one with a lever on the side that you press to use a the drag / clutch ? My mate had one of those , I obviously had the 506 and 501 ant the last one of our fishing trio ( used to call ourselves the Garcianals ) had the Abu cardinal , which if my memory serves me right had a really fast retrieve . . . Eeeee time flys eh. Don't seem two minutes ago since we were getting on the red bus at the Red Lion on York Road to go to Taddy and walk 3 miles down to the Mucky Hole

How did you get on with the crack Nige I can remember they were a bit of a cult when they first came on the scene. As far as I can remember not only did they have a strange drag system they had nylon gearing. Therefore I shall put them in the bad and ugly section! Until you tell me otherwise. Mick.
