You just need a pair of chest waders Paul and a black felt tip pen , all you do is wade out to where you think the fish will be shoaled up then mark the waders. When you get back on the bank stand on your hook and move your float to the mark you put on the chesties. Job done ! I'm sure someone else on here will tell you a decent heavy plummet will do the job but that's old school.
Good luck Paul

start at a depth you think it may be, keep moving the float if it keeps pulling under its dragging on the bottom. but it also depends on the shotting of the float weather the shotting is either all placed at the float end so the bait is slow sinking !!! or what I call the shirt button style where it more to do with the flow of the river !!! or the weight at the bottom near the hook link where the bait goes straight to just off the bottom !!! hope that helps !!! then it depends on where the float is fast or slow !!! this is far to technical for me lol , just stick a couple of small shot on without a float and let the weight of the shots just flow in the current job done
