Well I ventured out this aft with it all set in my mind exactly how I was going to tackle it . . then arrived at the river to find it over three foot up and tramming through
The swims I had in mind were unfishable so it was going to be another long rove along the bank trying to find somewhere that looked fishy ....... or should I say Barbelly
I finally found two swims with a little bit of slower water down the edge so plonked my gear down and dropped a bit of bait in each.
Sat down to recuperate with a coffee only to find I had either forgot to microwave the milk or forgot to reboil the kettle To cap it all my first mouthful camr with the skin off the milk (so I had obviously microwaved it ) Why do you spit that milk skin out as though its a sprout or poisonous
Anyway. I had my sarny and a cup of cold coffee and it was soon time to cast in. A big lump of Garlic spam was cast a rod length out with 3 ounce of lead on. Two seconds later the lead had rolled into the edge mmmmmmmm Reeled in and added another 2 ounce lead to the 3 and whizzed it back out ............... perfick
45 minutes late and I had been visited by a Jenny Wren , A woodpecker and 2 Kingfishers but no Barbel ...................... time for swim number 2.
Didn't really like the two leads on so went back to 3 ounce and literally lowered i off the rod end two rod lengths downstream.
Plonked the rod on the rest and sat in the sunshine deciding how long to stick it out.
At the 35 minute mark the rod top had the two inch twitch. A big smile emerged onto my mush and the heartbeat got faster . . . come on , take it ,. . . take it and 5 minutes later it did
The rod arched over , the clutch whizzed into action and the fish set off into the current. Fortunately it didn't go too far before it gave a little to the pressure and I gently eased it upstream . A few more Barbel thrashes and the odd almost straight rod as a result of net lunges and she was in the net
8 and a half on the nose ......................... job done
As it happens that was the only bite and only fish of the session but I had a smile on my face all the way home
Right, wheres that centrepin and my Grayling float
