hi charly I think its an excellent idea. Anglers should have to show their yearbook when entering matches aswell.

Good valid point in my view, another possibillity is that when fishing the water we should introduce a parking permit which has to be displayed when on the water. It worked at my old club, Yarm, so why not? Then just by going into the car park you can tell whether there are any non-members present. just a suggestion

Not all members have cars and sometimes two members come in 1 car.
solution
More bailiffs to cover the waters.

Is that an application to be a bailiff ? Don't you think that there are too few people doing too much already ? I wouldn't fancy approaching more than one person if I was on my own. Maybe it would be possible for a team of bailiffs to target waters on a random hit basis ? banjoman

Maybe all members dont have cars, but then it gives a rough number of how many people are on the lake. It would not take much effort really.
to put a card in the window with membership number on, just display it, then if a car of a non-member is there you would know about it. I agree about the baliffing, i would feel uncomfortable approaching people on waters. I have asked to see someones membership before and they were members. I only asked though cause they asked me first.

hi all, while everyone is on the subject of poachers i fish toppcliffe quite a lot and over the last year or two the amount of anglers who i have encounted there who are not members is beyond belive i`m a bit of a gob sh*te and will just stop and talk to anyone and most will freely admit when you ask them that they are not members, i had one incident last year when the river was in flood i turned up and there was a party of about 5 anglers with all the barbel clobber out and i asked if they were getting much then asked if they were members to which they replied "who are you the f***ing owner" i said no and told them that it was club water only and that they should really leave to this they then proceeded to threten me with the usual "smash your face in" etc needless to say i left with a flee in my ear looking back i should have phoned the police, now i don`t bother asking any more its just not worth it is there a number of someone in the club to deal with this sort of thing and are we members allowed to challenge suspect poachers

Tommygun and Tom these are really important comments, I am sure we can do something about it. Tom, I know where you fish and would me more than willing to show my membership book next season and ask for membership details to potential poachers next season. I do have the time and think that if we turned up 'mob handed' i.e me and you in the week! we would be more likely to deter the plebs.

okay here is a crazy idea but it works.
easy and cheap to have a id that must be displayed at all times clip it to ya jacket glue it to ya box but it must be displayed at all times this way no one needs to ask anyone they can see for themself if they arent a member or not. so that solves the asking part.. imo the only part you need to solve is what to do if you see someone who is not displaying their badge do you ring someone who will come out right away ? do you kindly tell them to fek off or do you do nothing ? i aint a member yet till i can get down to the anglers and sort it but i know for sure if i paid 40 odd quid to fish there and some scank didnt then i would be well pissed as im sure the maker of this post is .
here a idea. if a year book holder isnt displaying his badge when the warden comes round then fine him £2 for not displaying it this will pay for the badges plus make the people display them without question and will show who is and isnt a year book holder ? just a qwazy idea to stop the scanks

Before I moved to Leeds I used to fish Reading & Dictrict Angling Association, and in their books they used to have two card "car parking" permits which showed the membership number and they needed to be displayed whilst in club water car parks...it worked there, I can't see why it wouldn't work here.
On the bailifing issue, why don't you assign certian bailiffs to certain waters, if you don't already, that way there'll be a familiar face to all the regulars and for those who aren't, the bailiff could where a Leedsasa bailiff card or baseball cap. That's how it's done on CEMEX waters. For those without their book they'd be given 30/45 minutes to be of the water or reported to the club secretary. For repeat offenders, you could work on the "three strikes and you're out" rule.

iI used to be a member of stockton club where each member was given a sticker to put on the corner of there car windscreen and that used to work, only an idea but it might be worth trying they used to send you out a different coloured on evrytime you renewed your yearbook.

I totally agree, west riding anglers always introduce themselves or guests to each other, as do many other clubs,i believe it would deter poaching. also it would be nice to say hello to each other Rather than just walk past with a nod, not knowing if that person is a member or not.

The thing everyone needs to understand is that all bailiffs are volunteers and are not able to be on site 24/7. On Catterick I go round at various times of the day and tend to catch pretty much everyone. I can only do this as I don't work full time so I'm available to do it this way, other bailiffs wont be able to though. I don't think issuing fines will work cos if they are fishing without permits then why would they pay a fine? What I've done is form a relationship with the local police officers and as a result they come down onto site and even ask people if they've got tickets. I know this wont be easy to do on river sections but it makes sense to have local police know of any problems. You also need to inform the EA who will come make checks if people start to inform them of incidents. We can't just expect them to be on every river or pond all day and night. It's up to us to police our venues too, everyone has a bailiff warrant on their yearbooks and as a result you can ask to see tickets. As a rod licence holder you are also able to ask anyone who is fishing to show you their rod licence, as long as you have yours with you. If someone doesn't comply then inform the EA or police as you can be pretty certain they are not fishing legally.

i live in meanwood and fish highbury quite often...i am a member and have been for 3 years, but i fished it for 2 year without as no-one ever checks it+the signs arent really great. most people hu fish at highbury are local and most around 18/19...if a beilif asked them for £2 or 2 leave no matter who it was they would litteraly smash there face in...no one checks it anyway but what can you do against these people??!!
more needs to be done by the police on these matters and the anglers there like myself get things stolen by these people
