A letter has been sent to us "amalgamation" and the E.A concerning clarifying rules for fishing from boats on our waters, this came about after an angler arrived at his peg on a recent match at thorpe underwood to find three anglers anchored and fishing for pike a third of the way out, they were asked if they would move and an argument over rights started and became ugly. If the three pike anglers were Leeds members then they should not be fishing water pre booked for a match, bank anglers cant do it why should boaters be different? Leeds have the fishing rights on both banks to the middle of the river, if they were not members then they shouldn't be there in the first place, I know there has to be give and take but with the amount of water unaffected by matches on the ouse/ure it shouldn't be hard to find places to fish without causing conflict. Interesting to get the thoughts of a few pike lads.

Agree with your sentiments frim. I have often wondered whether some of these motorized pikers actually have licences to fish. Most pass by in a steady fashion but occasionally one rushes through your swim without any care for your fishing and only seem interested in getting to where they are going in the shortest time possible. In my opinion just as power has to give way to sail on the water then motorized anglers should always give way to bank anglers. There is an old word that describes it - etiquette. geoff

I get the feeling that some boat anglers don't consider they need a permit to fish the Ouse. I've been a member of a club on the Lower Ure which took legal advice over anglers boat fishing the stretches of the river they lease. The advice was that although the river was navigable, this did not give boat anglers a right to fish the club's water unless they were members.
The problem of course is how do you check anglers' permits when you are on the bank and the suspect anglers are on a boat in the middle of the river?
