Depends what you are looking for 123dgale! I use a shimano purist rod for most of my river fishing, less than £100 can get you a lot of rod these days.

If you are after the barbel, I have a Korum Twin Tip 1 3/4 lb - 2 1/4 lb test, excellent condition with original bag, very light use, £60 buyer collects or postage is extra. A good option for normal or flood conditions.

depends really what you are looking for....an all rounder is the ron thomson range...pref 10 footer due to the fact that they are cheap but very reliable. i can easily get prices from a fishing tackle shop, they are round bout £30. i use mine a few rod lengths of a weir and have always caught.....but i have stangly caught a few barbel about 20mtrs away from a wier too.

It depends entirely on the river and the species you'll be seeking. For general any species fishing on small to medium sized rivers (nidd, swale ouse etc.) a typical 'medium' type feeder rod would be versatile enough to cover most situations. Take a look at the okuma Solitron 12ft medium feeder rod, available for a very reasonable price. I believe you can still get the Drennan medium feeder combo which again would suit all these situations (though it is a lot more expensive) Shimano, shakespeare and several other companies do 12ft medium feeder rods that are suited to all round river work though you do have to be a bit carefull because a lot of modern rods (aimed at use on commercials) would have very limited use on rivers. If you intend to primarily target larger fish (often with bigger baits) you might want to look at one of the avon/quivertip combinations. Drennans series 7 avon/quiver rod is superb as is the shimano purist barbel (that someone else mentioned). If you don't have this sort of money to invest and/or you want to do a bit of everything then look at the John wilson11/13 avon quivertip rod. This is not the best of those mentioned but it probably is the most versatile. I take mine when I'm not sure what I'll be fishing for. Its superb for general silver fish and will cope with light hooklinks and tiny hooks (maggot feeder tackle) but I'm just as likely to use it for fishing big lumps of bread/lobs on size 4/6 hooks for chub/perch. I've also landed plenty of barbel on mine and while I wouldn't suggest it is a general barbel rod it will do this job if you only want to invest in one rod to do several tasks.
