Fantastic Result, shame about the team though.

hi guys, got a call from Alan today,he returned a missed call from me,i wanted to congratulate him on behalf of all at Leeds&dist for his magnificent performance in winning the world champs for the record 5th time,to win with 5 points or 2 does not relay matter, the fact his he was the best one on the 2 days, well done Alan from all of us. just a point of interest, his car broke down over there so he is still stuck there with Stu Conroy, will he come back to a knighthood,BBC sports personality of the year, all the press waiting for him at the docks,as any 5 times world champ deserves, well he might get 2 out of three but will the BBC recognize his magnificent achievements,i think not, they seem to think angling is not a sport, perhaps that allocade will go to bill Odie as the fastest bird watcher on tv.stan..

Too Ture Stan, 5 points or 2 points, it makes no difference. I just haven't heard it before, normally 2 or 3 points wins individual Gold.
The angling press will no doubt do their best to publicise it as much as possible.

your right paul, but thats the problem it will be only the angling press that give any coverage, it seems joe public dont give a toss, still weve got the womens world cup, and curling to read about in the tabloids! Talked to a few pleasure anglers this week and could'nt believe most didnt even know world champs had happend, what chance have we got when our own dont care?

Maybe most anglers aren't interested/involved in match angling as shown by the recent poll. Match anglers seem to always talk about how many fish they have caught, how well they have done .whether they made the most of a peg, but very rarely about the enjoyment of fishing itself or the wild life around them.

Is this the same gcb that had to ask stan if barbel were retained in keepnets in matches? your knowledge is amazing! How my comments of a few pleasure anglers not knowing or caring that the world champs had taken place, could be turned around to a anti match fishing rant is beyond me, to suggest match anglers dont enjoy their fishing or wildlife is as daft as the keepnet question, do you think all match anglers were born at the draw bag, most have been fishing since childhood enjoying all aspects of there sport and environment and move to matches simply for the competition and camaraderie, but this seems to be a problem to some sections of our sport.

That's right I asked stan about the retention of barbel during matches bacause it has long been a discussion point as to whether they should be. Personally I do not think that any large fish should be retained in a keepnet whether pleasure or match fishing.I still do not understand why you think pleasure anglers should know about the world championships, do you know about the contribution of Mr Sturdy to yorkshire fishing, each to his own I think. You asked me about the retention of all fish in a pm and not just barbel. I don't use a keepnet -but that is my choice- I understand that properly used barbel may be given time to recover in a keepnet, which is preferable to releasing these hard fighters too quickly, the accent being on properly used. In hot weather though it is surely wrong to retain fish for long periods. There is an increasing need to justify our treatment of fish these days. The welfare of the fish should be more important than our own egos. I once took part in a trout fishing match - the capture was reported by a bankside checker- and the fish was released immediately. In these matches size doesn't matter and a small fish counts just the same as a large fish. I think we need to be forever vigilant these days rather than just saying this is what we do accept it.

gcb, nowhere in my post did i give or ask for an opinion on the rights or wrongs of keepnets, but as usual the anti has surfaced even thro a world champs thread, having read all of the posts on this forum it seems most of the negatives are aimed at match angling from pleasure/specie sections, and very few are aimed back, yet you talk of being vigilant.

Here's one Specialist/ pleasure angler who definitely is not Anti Match Angling.
Thanks to this site, it was the earliest i had ever heard the result from the World Championships
It really is a great acheivement, Alan winning his 5th gold, that should be applauded by all areas of Angling.
With regard to Keepnets, i would be more concerned with how they are pegged out, their use is necessary and in the main when i have seen them used on River matches, they seem to be used ok, but i am sure there is the odd exception. But also there are a some specialist Anglers that don't handle fish as well as others!
But i must also say, the feeling of Anti Specialist Angling is also felt from our side, we really need to realise we are all members of leeds ANGLING club, once we all do that and the rules of the club reflect that, then the future of the club will be much brighter.

Fair enough points kev. I found this in the barbel society pages.
The Barbel Society recognises that barbel are retained in keepnets during matches. However, we appeal to match anglers to use the largest barbel friendly nets they can and to position them where the fish can obtain maximum through flow of water and minimum overcrowding. Staking the closed end of the keepnet up-river will greatly help in this matter. We also ask that a weigh and release policy is considered where large fish in particular can be weighed individually and released soon after capture.
We would also ask that soft slings are considered and used for weighing and that all barbel are nursed so as they are fully recovered before release.

Sod the Roach, Chub and Dace though Sound advice from the BS there, but surely it should aply to all species, is there a set code for handling less hardy fish than Barbel like Trout and Grayling? I have seen far more Roach and Perch go belly up through mishandling than Barbel. Well done Alan Scothorne 5 Times World Champ, amazing result!

GCB,ARE YOU ON GLUE OR JUST NARROW MINDED LIKE YOUR PREVIOS POST FISH ARE RETAINED IN FISHING BUT NOT JUST FRESH WATER FISHING.FISH ARE RETAINED IN SEA FISHING AND SPECIALIST CARP FISHING,WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT BARBEL? ? THERES PLENTY OF OTHER FISH THAT SWIM THE RIVERS.IS THERE EVIDENCE THATS SUPPORTS OWT ABOUT RETAINING COURSE FISH IN KEEP NETS I FOR ONE WHEN USING A NET MAKE SURE ITS WELL PEGGED OUT AND WELL SUBMERGED IN THE WATER/S SO FISH HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM TO MOVE.REF PLEASURE ANGLERS KNOWING OR BEING INTRESTED IN THE FRESH WATER WORLD CHAMPS THESE WORLD CHAMPS LIKE ALAN OR BOB NUDD HAVE AND ARE AMBASADORS OF FRESH WATER FISHING AND SHOULD BE RECONISED AS SO.IT WAS MANY YEARS AGO WHEN IN SCHOOL OUR TEACHER A FLY ONLY FISHERMAN INVITED THEN WORLD CHAMP DAVE THOMAS TO OUR AFTER SCHOOL FISHING CLUB "DID HE HAVE TO COME"? HE DID AND WHAT HE TAUGHT US REALLY SET ME ON MY WAY,HE TAUGHT US HOW TO SHOT FLOATS CORRECTLY EXPLAINED WHICH FLOAT FOR WHAT CONDITION AND LEDGERING AND MANY OTHER ASPECTS OF COURSE FISHING WHICH IS BETTER UNDERSTOOD BY A CHAMP IN THE FLESH AND SIGNED AUTOGRAPHS WHAT AN AMBASADOR. WELL DONE ALAN AND UP THE SOCIETY. FROM A FELLOW PLEASURE/COMPETITION ANGLER....
