There would appear to be a preconceived notion about the club being transfixed in some 60s 70s match fishing time warp, and until those that think that realise we have already fought that battle and won there will continue to be a them an us situation. ---
With Stan's Presidency came a new era in which all the societies members and all their requirements are important.. ---
I have been a serious big fish angler for many years but I also spend a lot of time with a fly rod in my hand and as much time as I can after silver fish with a float rod. It is always people new to the speccy hunting scene that have preconceptions about match anglers. never the reverse.
I have always had a deal of respect for match anglers . They taught me a about catching the things I fish for and it is a good job that they don't turn there attention toward big fish fishing themselves as they would show many of the so called specialists a thing or two.
In the last twenty years they have had to migrate from rivers first to canals then to commercials and now there is a growing drift back to competitive fishing on running water again which I for one welcome, to adapt through all these kind of changes, be consistent and successful is an achievement and many of the match men associated with the club have done just that.
Most of those guys were big fish men any way as they learned their trade on the Ouse, Swale and Wharfe where a win meant bream Chub or Barbel. I would like to make a couple more points, first we should realise that fishing as we know it would never have come to be if it were not for match fishing as these large societies that still exist to day were born through match fishing and we are all still benefiting from that .
Finally all anglers should celebrate our achievements in international competition we have the best anglers in the world in this country and the guys at that level should be celebrated as role models for youngsters, god knows they need it . If you look back at what our national squad has achieved over the last thirty years it puts many of our national squads in other sports to shame.
Oh by the way gcb I don't think Sturdy's fancy compares in achievement to that of Francis Walbran or Pritt or the Otley trio
( my Home Town ) of Tom chippendale William Brumfitt and RM Pratt. I forget to mention Jim Bazley. I could go on but won't .
