A few notes from Thursdays meeting
HIMALAYAN BALSAM
BACKGROUND
A biological control agent for the invasive non-native Himalayan balsam is scheduled for release in the UK later this year, with the aim of controlling the spread of balsam to below an economic and ecologically damaging threshold.
CABI (the supplier) is convinced that there is no risk from this fungus to native or ornamental plants in the UK. Importantly, they have also convinced Defra & Fera of the same.
There will be five release sites in the south of England this year. Next year, they plan to have a second phase of release, which would include sites in the North.
..............................................
We have been in touch with CABI through our contacts in the EA and asked how much it would cost to fund our own trial and the figure is in the region of £20k !!!
POLO POND
Unfortunately we have recently had several incidents of large Carp being found dead at Polo. We have had the EA visit and test the water and all is fine.
Further investigations have revealed mistreatment of the fish and also reports that fish approaching ten pounds have been retained in keepnets despite this being strictly against Club rules.
Fish are also suffering from lack of oxygen due to the recent dry spell.
In light of the above, it was agreed to IMMEDIATELY suspend the use of keepnets at Polo pond. This will be reviewed at a later date .
We would request that all anglers fishing Polo observe these rules and ensure that all other anglers do so as well. Please ensure that our fish are looked after. Keep them low to the ground at all times. Use an unhooking mat. Rest them well before release etc.
SEAL AT ULLESKELF
Despite several attempts with various organisations to try and have our resident seal removed, it looks like Sammy is with us until he’s had enough to eat or gets a phone call from the wife asking when he's coming home !!
Nothing can be done to have a fit and healthy seal removed.
CANAL SUNDAY 5TH OCTOBER
There is a bike race on the canal towpath this Sunday and it is expected to be chaotic around Woodlesford area. May be worth steering clear or trying another venue this Sunday.
NEW WATER AT MIDDLEHAM
See map under "what venue" thread
All the best
