this relates mainly to Barbel fishing but I just wondered which method others prefer. I would say 95 % of the time I fish with the reel locked up and the rod either in my lap or no further than a foot from my right striking arm !! On the Trent I tend to use the bait runner but I'm not really sure why . Maybe the bites are a bit more vicious ? I know quite a few who prefer just to put the bait runner on and sit and wait for the rod to bounce and the fish to take the line . . . .

locked up & if feeling drowsy (comes with age !) a velcro strap to my hand that is attached to the butt !! I worry that if they get too much line straight away they can build up a head of steam & can be difficult to turn away from snags etc Cheers Andy

I nearly always fish two rods, if the swim allows, close together and within easy reach. Both are locked into the rear rod rests. I have the bait runners on if there is room for the fish to run, but if there are any snags reels locked up. In reality I watch the rod ends like an hawk and they usually bounce slightly before the wrap round and the fish hardly gets to run in any case, but 99% of the swims I fish mean the bait runners are not engaged. Makes it interesting when the rod butt pings out of the rear rod rest and you have to catch it mid air though, usually with sandwich/hot drink in hand!

I used to do the same till an Ouse Barbel pulled my rod in as I was reaching for a sandwich (I did retrieve it but the Barbel had gone), these days it's a tightly set bait runner (or two) or occasionally a centrepin with a loud ratchet

Locked up now Dave. I used to use a bait runner but prefer to be ready to whack into the fish when they bite nowadays

You can't beat it when your locked up and on the rod and it just keeps going and going !!! But as one or two have said there's something magical about the sound of the bait runner and the sight of the spool spinning ! Eddies brought another one up in his post . . One rod or two I used to be a one rod man but tried two this season when the confidence was low on a wider river. Half an hour after casting in and it was like the Barbel were on Walkie talkies . . . "NOW" . . . Whack, both the rods went at exactly the same time. What followed made the heart beat to say the least

One rod now, again I have fished two but I find if I use two rods, there are times where I compensate for putting baits in different areas without either rod being necessarily being 'on the money'. On slower, deeper and wider stretches I will go to two for pike fishing

If I was using two, the baitrunner would be on!

Eddie. yh I would agree Eddie bait runners if it allows, but with Rushy mostly fishing on the Nidd the only place the fish are going are in the snags lol. I may give just a little slack but not much just to play the fish.

I was fishing near snags in high river the other day and it was amazing just holding on not giving it an inch of line, proper clamping down on it! In the end he turned round and said "fine I'll go the other way" and shot off!

I have had two carp on at the same time, both times with the bait runners on. Don't know if you were on the Trent Dave, but I have read a few articles that say sometimes one rod is enough to handle if the barbel are having it! You would have your hands full in the snaggy nidd swims!
