Received some sad news this weekend that my old mate and fishing buddy of the 1980's , Ken Charlton, has passed away. As Ken always told me he Enjoyed reading the posts and banter on here I thought it only mighty be fitting to post my fond memories.
I worked with Ken at Barnbow where he operated a large 4 poster machining centre which used to machine the external features of Chieftain and Challenger Tank hulls. We spent many an hour hiding behind the huge structure of the machining centre talking fishing. Mainly me searching for advice and tips !! We had it down to perfection hiding from the foreman
Ken was a cracking angler and will be well known to many of the older Leeds and District Asa Matchmen. I used to fish with him almost every Saturday on our Barnbow AC matches. Ken used to have a team called Charltons Geriatrics which comprised some excellent anglers such as Paul Todd, CLive Potter, Steve Clegg to name but a few from memory. Nev Sykes , MIck McLEan and many more joined us every SAturday for our weekly match.
My team of three exuberant Engineering Apprentices were called the A Team !!! All week long we used to give them grief and stick, telling them how we were going to do them this week and every week ........ We got stuffed
It cost us 50p in last bets each and every week but we didn't give in. To add insult to injury I had to ring the Evening Post up every week and give them the results . . . And every week the winning team was Charltons Geriatrics . . . Printed in the YEP much to Kens delight !!!
We did actually win one match and boy did we make the most of it . . . We lived on that win for about 3 years
I went to work in Nottingham for ten years and left my Barnbow buddies behind but kept in touch and Ken was still doing the business.
When I moved back up here I bumped into Ken and the lads in the pub at Tadcaster after a fishing session. They were still match fishing but on commercials. The old banter started to flow and two pints laer I had my name down for the next weeks match at Tollerton Ponds. I gave Ken some encouragement before the match about his failing eyesight and did he really want the pound side bet.
Result . . . Charlton 73 pound . . . Rushy . . . 23 pound . . . . Another quid bites the dust
Ken turned up at out Forum AC get together last year at Hunters Lodge knocking on 85 year old and I was greeted by the familiar
" Na then Rushy , are you still useless "
We had a great catch up and he couldn't resist it when I offered him the chance to sit on my roving seat and show me how it was done.
3 minutes after he settled himself down on the seat and had the rod in his hand ready to show me once again how good anglers perform , the seat started to tilt , 5 seconds later he was laid in the River Ouse . . . Laughing his head off . . . 85. Years old . . What a guy !!!!!
In true Barnbow , A team vs CHarltons Geriatrics spirit I couldn't resist it . . . . I had to get the camera out
Fond memories Ken , tight lines buddy
