Decided to go fishing today as the river level would be falling. Following my conversation with a member of the Barbel Society yesterday re four doubles being caught on their stretch I chose Asenby. Nobody was there, the water was perfect having dropped about two feet overnight. I chose a nice crease and threw in some rich, soft groundbait to drift down and attract any hungry fish. Put a halibut pellet on the hair and settled down for a pleasant day.
The sky cleared, the sun came out then there was the terrible smell of diesel. It was 1405hr. I had only been there 30 minutes. I quickly pulled out the tackle as it swept through - bank to bank. It was unrelenting and I rang the EA again (I had rung them yesterday to report fuel entering the river between Topcliffe and Asenby.) As I was a good half a mile downstream of yesterday this spillage was obviously much greater. They said that they would investigate. As fishing wasn't possible I returned to the car for a bottle to take a sample. What I am supposed to do with it I don't know.
As the river was still falling this pollution will be left stinking on the bank, unfortunately.
I hope that it has been stopped as it will curtail fishing on our stretch at Asenby unless barbel have a liking for diesel-tainted baits.
As the day still had some time to run I motored a short distance and started again. The Gods must have been with me as at five o'clock I was into a big barbel - my first double -11lb 6oz. At twenty to six the reel screamed again. It was another giant but loosely hooked and whilst carefully trying to turn the fish it came off.
There will be another day.
I have had eighteen barbel in twelve weeks for my first attempt at course fishing. It has been a great experience. My thanks to my local tackle shop and to those many stalwarts I have spoken too on my travels. Only one person (not Leeds) was unpleasant.
Keep to the Society rules and have a great weekend.
Cheers.
