Any one fish the Wakefield waters? They have a good number of lakes that look inviting.

Cheers Harry. They do have a lot of nice ponds and I get my best results on them so I may get their book.

Hi Steve
Wakefield has some good still waters but limited river stretches. It depends what fishing you want to do, has Eddie as mentioned New Miller Dam is a good all round large water. The large upper lake at Nostell Priory is more a specimen water but is very neglected.
I tend to fish the smaller lakes/ponds Half moon lake at Kirkthorpe is a good Tench water, very secluded and it is a bit of a hike from where you park your car.
Flanshaw Dam and Walkers Dam at Alverthorpe are mixed fisheries, easy close parking, again because they are close to houses , dog walkers, kids playing and riding bikes it can be a problem.
Healey dam at Ossett is another good mixed fishery, again this is quite secluded but good close parking.
These are the ones I fish most, as I live on the Leeds/Wakefield border. You will need a key to gain access to park your car at most of the venues.
Hope this is of some help, if you need more info, message me or have a look at their website.

Thanks for the info gents. I’m in South Leeds so the lakes are relatively local to me so I think I will give it a go. Andy how much of a hike is Halfmoon lake it looks just my cup of tea.

Thanks for the replies I appreciate them. I don’t have the time to explore new big waters and some of them are far to urban and noisy for me plus even though I don’t catch much on the rivers I do enjoy the peace and quiet so I will be staying with the Leeds book.

The halfmoon has got to be one of the best looking waters in west Yorkshire. Sadly neglected by wakey ac. Has been poached to an extent, but still holds a fair few tench swell as other species. You get very little bother fishing here, though some dodgy looking chatacters do tend to hang about in the woods. Also has some large carp.
Nostell top lake is a good water for feeder fishing for the bream and tench. Though can get very weedy in the summer.
Newmiller dam similar to nostell but good for roach and perch to decent sizes To float/ pole tactic, sadly its very busy with walkers. A few large carp here also.
Wakefield and horbury lagoons, specimen carp, tench and bream, far from easy, mainly due to depth of water. Horbury side tends to get busier as it has more carp.
Kirthorpe, walkers, flanshaw, Healy small well stocked waters. But busy with the exception of Healy, due to close proximity of houses.
Good silver sport on river calder and canal. Lovely little stretch of river dearne for trout, grayling, perch and dace.
Its good value for money, alas though many of the waters are sadly neglected.
