insert code here Well . I've spent the last week lazing about in the sunshine with the odd venture out in the car . . . I can normally manage half an hour laying on a sun lounger before boredom sets in I've done Cedric Manrique and the Timanfaya National Park and the wonderful, sights of the Playa Dorada beach but I must confess to the odd thought of an overhanging willow on the Nidd surrounded by Himalayan Balsam Not long now These Aldi sunglasses are ace . . . Nice one Binner

The Nidd looks great Dave :-) Started doing some pre baiting (never works for me...who cares :-) Baits stocked up, reels re spooled, hook lengths tied, none of the jobs done in the closed season I promised myself finished :-) The balsam is pushing through well alongside the nettles on the banks. My fishing mate "Golden Boilies" is courting a plumper from Madchester, so I have a head start on the catching tables before the call of the banks becomes too much for him and he dumps her to spend all his money on source boilies :-)
I am looking forward to some chub sessions with you this season, enjoy the break...not long now ;-)

Love it Think I was dancing with one of them last night . . . From what I can remember If you can let me know which swims you have prebaited and I will make sure I don't prebaited the same ones . . . Seems daft us both doing it

I agree about the double pre baiting Dave....d**n good idea! :-) If you let me know the swims that YOU have pre baited, that would be an even better idea. You have got to play these things smart!....there are people out there who will swim jump if you give them half a chance...the crafty devils ;-)))
As regards "Golden Boilies" I shall give the romance thing one day after I tell him I have had TWO Nidd doubles in my first session of the new season :-) Soon as I get him back on the bank I will tell him it was just a wind up....he will love it! :-)
Send me those swim details as soon as you can as I am out feeding em again at the weekend! :-)

Deanos Chuck me a dozen boilies in this swim tomorrow will you. About three foot above the crease where there's a nice pace. It's the peg with the balsam in and a willow on the far bank . . . You can't miss it Cheers bud

No problem Dave, got that down to 3000 swims, so shall need 5 months off work and 7 tons of boilies, I had best get started asp! :-)))
That's a d**n nice kipper mate! I shall of course eclipse such catches with my MK 45 Super Bait this season. All I can say is that the last time I came across a similar pong was when I was doing some freelance septic tank cleaning last year! I shall pop some round when you get back from your holidays at Cleethorpes! :-)

Claire wants to go to Monkey Moorton on Saturday so we'll walk the Nidd again with the dog no doubt. Might do some limited (i.e. skinflint) pre-baiting.
want to have a look at the stretch below Skip bridge as well this time - I was reading the famous "Nidd barbel migration research" and my conclusions were that _if_ I do target barbel in June I might as well be where they've been proven to be present at that time in the past, but less likely to be spawning. Looks like there's only going to be a few deeper runs in that section, so the accessibility +depth criteria might make it pretty easy to choose a peg down there?

Nige , with the odd exception , the depth is fairly uniform down there mate , give or take a foot Cheers - I should have learned by now that google satellite images for our smaller rivers were inevitably taken in the height of summer and seems to show the likes of the Wharfe and Nidd at a very low ebb And to be honest my view of the satellite images didn't really fit in with that research I was reading anyway - it says there isn't much potential for barbel spawning below Skip Bridge, and I trust that conclusion by an expert more than I trust my own guesses about depth based on looking down from a satellite! Looking forward to seeing the river again and will be giving some more nettles a thrashing no doubt.

Nice walk. A very accessible*, fishable stretch, pretty much nettle free (thank you cows) and mine eyes have seen the glory of the finest creases in Yorkshire, and they aren't at Headingley Cricket ground.
But... where's the frickin' weir below the bridge ? The maps show a weir. Google earth shows a weir. The most famous barbel research paper in history (i.e. not that famous) talks about the weir.
But the weir is invisible.
[ * by the way, I mean "accessible" in that I could have fished very promising swims without walking too far or hacking through anything, but I did have to go over 2 locked gates and a style and trip over a loose bundle of barbed wire, which is OK as far as I'm concerned cos I just thanked goodness it wasn't the dog or another animal and tidied it up ]

If I'm right Nige there was a weir below the bridge but it was removed!

If I'm right Nige there was a weir below the bridge but it was removed! Thank you for confirming that my powers of observation aren't quite as bad as I thought. They're pretty bad though - I fished right under the main road bridge there in February without noticing the shallow concrete shelf that is totally dry and exposed now in June, and occupies half of the width of the river.

Nige I used to fish that stretch over 20 years ago when the weir was there, I think it was some sort of measuring station and once enough information was taken they would remove it. I did go down again 3 years ago and what a difference it looked and made with the flow of the river they use to be some good chub between the two bridges, also they use to be a smaller weir about 30 yards down made of metal or cast iron plates don't know if that's still down there or not. between the 2 weirs used to be good for smaller fish but saying that me and my brother both had a massive perch like a dinner plate but in them days you didn't take your camera word of mouth from 1 angler to another was good enough. they used to be a couple of good holes round the corner just of the bend for Barble but not been down for years maybe I should give it another go. now where do I go on the 16th to many choices P.S. by the way I do remember when there was only 1 bridge that layby main road was a nightmare believe me who ells remembers this.

used to be a couple of good holes round the corner just of the bend for Barble that's exactly what I thought. Creases made in heaven coming off the faster stretches into the bends. Thanks for confirming it Johnboy! And it all makes sense now - that 'smaller weir' was according to what i've read a major barrier to fish migration, so they removed it but it's still on my maps and on google earth. As for the 16th, I'll just have a few hours in the evening, with only me bike for transport so looks like I'll be on the Aire in Leeds.
