My very first trip to the river Nidd ever today I parked at skip bridge about fifteen yards past the gourmet breakfast Hut I was there early and no one around just a few wagon drivers still in there pits so seemed ok to park there .
Anyway seeing the Nidd Is a total mystery to me regarding what section I was on probably |Hammerton Mill top Bottom Railway top bottom skip bridge top bottom or what ever .
Anyway i was traveling light I mistakenly thought so not knowing my skip bridge bottom from my elbow I proceeded to climb over the style dont ask me which style .
I continued upstream keeeping close to the river all the way up till I was a few yards from the railway bridge that crosses the river and i wasnt even sweating much .
So i thought to myself bugga this for a jar of thingyles I have walked far enough so I did not investigate the access any further than this .
Started to walk back downstream and hey ho about 30 or so yards down I spotted what appeared to be signs of previous angler activity so I investigated further A swim thinks I and not a bad one If I am any judge .
So plonks my minimal tackle down sorts myself out and 10 mins later I am In the swim rod In hand, so i sprinkled a few pellets in downstream just above the bush Mr crabtree eat your heart out me thinks.
First cast Is a belter well more of a flick than a cast anyway I settles myself In ready for the inevitable bite 5 mins pass without incident and we are just about reaching 10 mins when would you adam and eve It a bite and a fair decent twonk It was to .
So i picks up the rod and low and behold Its fish on time so i gives it some welly but it seeks refuge under the bush so i give It some more welly and out It comes from the branches a chub around two and a half maybe even three pounds what a start magic .
Not wishing to empty the peg after having had one first bung I gathered up my gear and went In search of the next sign of previous angler activity.
So after much cursing and sweating and nettle stings etc etc I managed to find a couple of mountain goat jobs and nearly went Arsene Wenger over tit on more than one occasion .
By now a considerable amount of time had passed I had flirted briefly with a few "pegs" but had In all honesty done very little actual fishing.
By now I was almost In what I presumed to be barbel alley as the pegs where becoming ever so slightly dare I say it "worn In" then disaster struck my carefully constructed rig disintegrated [ well the pellet band broke] shine or words to that affect .
I was by now feeling the affects of my exertions could I be bothered to tye on another hook ?
Sadly no even though i felt I was well Into the bagging pegs by now one even had a sign on it saying Rushys go to baggin Peg but alas I was cream crackered so i decided to use the remainder of my time checking out the hot pegs .
I ambled back sweating and breathing like a broken winded nagg eventualy reaching the car I wheezed a sigh of relief and packed my gear into the car.
Just time for a quick bacon buttie before setting off home , And time to reflect on my session my thoughts were 1. Is the Nidd for me 2. am I fit enough for this type of fishing 3. Is It really worth the effort 4. have I taken leave of my senses 5. should I be certified .
I had enjoyed It In a masocistic sort of way will I be back? I can honestly say I am not sure .
Can anyone tell me If the armchair swim on the right hand bank between the old bridge and the new road bridge Is Leeds water? I had a quick look and have to say It looked like It might be worth a go,I had spotted It a few weeks ago when I drove past there was someone fishing It.
Oh Nige I dont know about Hammerton being publess but the Anchor Inn at Whixley does a magic carvery not the cheapest unless you go tuesday lunchtime for the pensioners special and the beers very good as well .
I would just like to say to anyone who was involved with the work party on this stretch do not take any of my comments regarding the state of the river bank pegs etc as anything more than tongue In cheek you all deserve medals for putting In the time and effort thats for sure.
I surpose Its back to Bobble Tvs Rushys guide to barbel fishing for beginners for me I deffo need It.
Tight lines to all you river men and dont forget your thingyles sorry kockles
Oh and just one more question could I have walked further up this stretch under the railway bridge? subject to me having a mars bar and an energy drink before continuing and would It be worth the effort?
