I used to have an old wooden "starback" centre pin It would do half a revolution with a good "bat" which was good cos you didnt get many overun tangles and birds nests wish I still had It! I have been an abu closed face convert for many years and they are great for roach dace etc but not so for barbel .

Nice picture , good to see your drive tooth interface is holding up.
I had a pin based disaster at hammerton last sat , got the maggot feeder rod set up nicely after a hour or so of catching perch and bits decided to go for Mr Barbus. Out comes the 1-75lb rod to be coupled with my trusty speedia freshly re spooled for the day with 12 lb sensor. After a bit of huffing and puffing I realise the foot on the old pin is to long to fit a modern reel seat......doh ! Should have checked at home first.
Should I cut it down or leave it for the carp rods ?
Mick.

Speedia reel seat now cut down very neatly if I may say so. Just need a big old barbel on it now.

Mick , I've got an old battered old school pin but I tend to us e the newer Konix. Forty quid I think it was and it runs as smooth as Rolls Royce . But having said that the ratchet system fell out after the Trent session but I've managed to get it back together. It does seem to have a bit of backlash on the gear to driving tooth interface now I was going to ask about these konix reels on the forum but came across your post,I do not want to spend a lot on a pin only to find I do not like it, If my memory serves me my previous attempts years ago were not that good. I have been an avid abu closed face user for trotting on rivers and have caught a lot of silvers and the odd chub using them maybe I should stick with what I know but for forty sheets maybe It would be worth a go. Konix is a lovely reel for the money Steve and I'm sure if you don't abuse it and just use it for regular float fishing it will see you good for years

I would second that, lovely reel and can be had at a reasonable price if you shop carefully

The Okuma is superb ; I also have a Match Aerial (lovely aesthetically but not patch on the modern reel ) and an Adthingy Stanton (British , great reputation but wore out too quickly). Wouldn't use anything else for grayling trotting in mid winter and stick float work in summer and autumn .

I've tried a fair few and to be honest, putting aside the traditional wants of a pin, the okuma Sheffield is spot on

The Okuma seems popular does it have a strong ratchet mechanism?
