I was just wondering what you guys think is the best 'pin for all round fishing. I use them for trotting rivers and margin carp fishing , also a bit of close quarter barbeling.
I'm a bit of a sucker for these reels and have four of various vintages. Basically what I would like to know is do you prefer a old school 'pin or one of the many excellent new breed models ?

Mick , I've got an old battered old school pin but I tend to us e the newer Konix. Forty quid I think it was and it runs as smooth as Rolls Royce . But having said that the ratchet system fell out after the Trent session but I've managed to get it back together. It does seem to have a bit of backlash on the gear to driving tooth interface now

"Driving tooth interface" that's sounds a bit technical Dave. I have simpler words for the situation , but can't write them on here. I too use a cheap modern 'pin I have a tfg one , its really smooth with no wobble unlike the older models I have that have seen some action and abuse. I'm getting tempted by those greys bewick models that are being touted about for just short of a ton. My old spedia gets used a bit for a bit of nearside barbel ledgering if I'm in a suitable swim , it's great for this 'cos it's got a 3 position ratchet so you can even fish it when it's pushing hard.

Mick, like you I have quite a few of various vintage but the two I'm currently using are the Okuma Sheffield a quality reel absolutely bullet proof!! Loaded with 10lb Sensor for Barbeling. The other reel is a Marco Contasse, £30 from Dragon Carp this is the most free running and smoothest C/P I've ever come across, loaded with 4lb Stroft I use this for all Silvers, the best £30 I've ever spent.

I've got an old Aerial which will run for ever & see me out, which is great for Dace & Chub - but for heavier work I use a Hardy Conquest that can cope with heavier (10lb) line. cheers Andy

Mick I think the "simpler words " you are referring to are what I said it was to Cabbo when we were on the Trent I will give it a few more outings and see how it goes. If all else fails I'll have to put my hand in my pocket All the best Dave R

I use a Konix, smooth as anything and so far have had no trouble with the gear to driving tooth interface so far, at least I don't think so. Although it did fall off my old Abu rod once with the old type reel clips at Skipton airfield and I had to pull 150 yards of line off the reel before I could pull it back out.

Would that involve a river Dave or our premier commercial venue ?

Don't talk to me about commercials Mick !! Fished the Delegates match on Saturday and a daft swan got tangled in my method feeder line. In my panic I grabbed hold of the line near the reel with both hands and pulled it to try and snap it. Good stuff that 7lb Maxima and I've two big very sore monofilament slices in both my index fingers to prove it With blood trickling down my fingers I managed to keep calm and cut the line. The swan flicked its neck , released the line and swam back towards me . I'm sure it had a grin on its beak One good thing came out of it . . . I lost my method feeder so that's one less piece of commercial fishing equipment I have that will not be getting replaced So in answer to your question , it will be a river outing

Ouch ! It really hurts that maxima, don't give up on the method feeder though , you can use 'em on the river when pellet fishing. Not seen many swans at kp , they must of got wind of your mussel stash.
