Having watched the last cast video for barbel fishing novices I am keen to continue my quest for a Yorkshire barbel three attempts so far this season no luck as yet . I notice on the video both rushy and brent sporting fly fishing type vests, as an angler who finds It difficult not to take far to much tackle with me i was considering purchasing a vest to carry the bits and bobs required for the roving approach. Any feedback around the pros and cons of such items and recommendation on the best ones to consider would be great not wanting to spend a fortune only to find its not a practical solution. Or would a shoulder bag be better my 30 litre rucksack seems to get awfully heavy and i have to empty it to get at the stuff I need .

Hi mate i do indeed were a waistcoat jacket most of the time, however when roving the rivers i find it much easier to use a small rucksack which also doubles up as a chair, i dont think you can get enough in the waistcoat alone. Hope that helps

in about 3-4 weeks now aldi will have their fishing gear in like they do every year, and 2 weeks after that it'll all be half price - the tackle is beginners' cr@p but things like bags and clothing are OK if you're not a designer label tart.
Very strong little roving bags will be 9.99 but then 4.99 half price every year by mid august, vests with loads of pockets including a big poacher's pouch at the back about the same price.
then of course there's the polaroids that will get knocked down to £1.99 - Rushy loves 'em - and the cap with the LED light in, great for packing up after darkness has fallen. But by the time that's down to half price £1.99, most of the batteries will have gone due to people fiddling with them in the shop, so you've got to delve to the bottom of the 'bin' and do a 'brightness test'. the battery in my one has lasted from last August till now! Trust me, I'm the Aldi expert
and when the bait goes half price I'll just grab as much as I can store (halibut pellets - most of which get ground up back into fishmeal, cooked hemp & mixed particle, plus usually various flavours of boilies).
I'm not too proud about my gear, as you can tell, but I am proud that in nearly a year back fishing, in my fifties now, i've still never taken anything to sit on !! The unhooking mat will do me.

Thanks for the input guys looks like I will be keeping an eye on Aldi over the next few weeks I normaly shop at Waitrose or If I am slumming It Sainsburys ....... as If LOL no Lidel Is actualy fine for me meat corn cat meat etc human consumption Its Tesco / Asda all the way. I just cannot get my head round carrying minimal gear Its all those years I spent match fishing[ do i really need that kitchen sink?] every time I try cutting the gear back I always end up bulking out with the just In case you never know If stuff. Maybe I should make a little list and stick to It!! you cannot imagine how difficult that will be .

Fly fishing makes you take a minimalist approach as you are on your feet all day. Yesterday I fished for 6 hours with one wisp of an 8' rod, lightweight reel and waistcoat with 4 fly boxes, spare nylon and lunch. One net, a pair of chestwaders and I am sorted. I take the same approach to lure fishing, grayling trotting and drop shotting . It works.

Steve I don't go fishing without my trademark vest. I got it from Go outdoors about 3 years ago and its absolutely brilliant. I know what is in every pocket and I can go fishing with just my vest, a rod and a landing net. Unfortunately it has seen better days with pockets getting ripped as a result of getting caught on fences and such like so I actually went to Go outdoors at the weekend to buy a new one .......... they don't stock it anymore I have found a supplier but there is a minimum order charge which means I would have to buy 6 or more and they would work out at about £20. They only do it in green now. Are there 5 more anglers out there who fancy one The alternative is t'internet www.amazon.co.uk/Jack-Pyke-Countryman-Shooting-Fishing/dp/B00KFKAYFQAll the best Rushy

So I am currently looking for an outlet where i can try before i buy so to speak, have to say i am not having much luck In that direction at the moment tried Trespass as they show one that looks ok on there site but every one of there stores that i have enquired at dont stock them. Am I right In presuming from your post that you have found a supplier of your origanal vest all be It In green rather than the real tree type camou of your signature vest? I tried my local go outdoors recently and they said they did have some until recently but had sold out. I am a 42 inch chest so Judging by the varying sizes across different manufacturers I am thinking i would be a large or extra large.

I have done some more research online and have found a company that sells on e bay called military first they sell there own brand stuff mil-tec I belive a lot of the Jack Pyke stuff Is made by mil-tec . They do a nice looking fishing vest In various colours and I quiet like the look of the flektarn camou version they come In at £21.99 with free postage. As i said they do various colours besides the flektarn camou but sadly no flamboyant colours for those late sessions at Skip! Might put one on my wishlist If I cannot source a suitable one In the next week or so.

Stevo, have a look at the Airflow Outlander rucksack / vest, they are light in themselves but very strong. there's one on the John Norris website. I use a Snowbee lightweight vest for both fly fishing and river roving but I need a rucksack as well for waterproof, flask etc.

Hi, think small Aldi tackle bags full price, gone up to about £10.99 (but buy when reduced). Loads use them, Carpers for Cooking Tackle etc, Lure Anglers for Lures etc, etc etc. I have a few of them.
Cheers Bob
