Had a short early morning session on my favourite Yorkshire Derwent today fishing by 06.10 with one rod In a peg not to far from Malton fed eight of the large Rolls Royce pellets and four marble sizes pieces of paste made from finely ground"silver lady pellets" no secret baits here lads If Trefor says there the dogs Doo Dahs thats good enough for me .
I have to say my confidence was not sky high having suffered five barbel less sessions so far this season on the Derwent, the cast was made and my double dogs dooh da pellet hookbait carefully encased In silver lady paste was In prime position.
All that was required now was for me to settle back In my chair and wait for the improbable 2ft twitch, hang on was that an enquiry? and another settle down there probably just chub or phsyco minnows
Time was ticking by so I fllicked a few more "rollers" and a blob or two of paste In those chub had most likely cleaned me out .
Time for a reel In might be snagged and sure enough I am give it some and the lead flys back and lands with a barbel scaring plop in the edge, never mind cant be helped and rig seems ok rebait and out again.
A bit more bait deposited and settle back for a while, king fisher flashes past and theres a mink nosing around on the far bank, another enquiry and then wallop a proper twitch fish on and Its no chub thats for sure.
Giving It some and It wasnt coming towards me give it as much as I dare and yes i think shes out In the open water, Yes Its a barbel not a monster but a decent fish even to my untrained eye.
Yes shes ready for the net so i ease her upstream and position the net a foot or two below thanks for that tip "Westy" , ease her down and she slips into the waiting net job done.
I look round just In time to see an old guy peering down the bank above me "thats a big un" he says, but I am lost In the moment and cannot muster a reply just hoping hes a dog walker and not a lurking barbel man.
Unhooked In the net no need for the mat as quick as a flash shes recovering In the net head upstream no piccys no weighing Its not my style , a good five minutes and shes ready to go, and away she goes to fight another day.
So the barbel gods have been kind to me today I have crossed off two objectives from my list In one stroke a barbel from a Yorkshire river my first for over 30 years and from my beloved Derwent no less, It cannot get better than that!!!
I gather up my gear and move downstream to the peg below, sadly my efforts In the "reserve swim" do not yield anything just a kamikaze minnow foul hooked. so i introduce some of my remaining bait Into both swims and pack up.
Heading home I am a happy angler I just need to update my objective list a Nidd barbel perhaps, but for sure I will return to the Derwent In search of another barbel fix
