Luncheon meat... too soft? Chub seem wise to it and know how to snatch it off the hair/hook. Going to try a much harder sausage instead (ooh errm no Mrs), which also happens to be more spicy and garlicky too in the case of chorizo
Anyone used pepperami / chorizo with success?

I think Pepperami is quite popular with Babelists Nige. Ive tried it myself several times and never had a sniff on it

Used pepperami quite a lot, handy to carry and spicy. Funny thing is I caught lots of chub, but it does stay on a hair very well.

I too always have pepperami sticks in my kit both the red and green varieties stays on the hair forever. Not had much success with it though.

I find bacon grill better for the hook, but off subject I`ve had better result with sweet corn then meat both with barbel and chub don't get the nibbles from the smaller fish either. just thought I`d but the spanner in the works lol

Said it before garlic sausage In Its many guises is much tougher than spam or plumrose etc you might find it In supermarkets In a red plastic wrapper but the best stuff is the extra strong from the deli counter, you will need to ask them to cut you a suitable thickness slice as they tend to slice it up into wafer thin slices. They must sell a fair bit to anglers as when i have bought It after asking for a thick slice they often say going fishing then!!!!

Yesterday I had to fall back on some 'last resort' hooklengths that I tied earlier in the season(when I was still clueless). with the hairs a bit too long for anything but bigger baits than I've ever used, certainly too long for my big red halibut pellets (with krill). After a few tangles I was suddenly forced to use these hooklengths on both my two rods ...
So I made up the difference in bait length with a small section of pepperami, because the colour and diameter matched the pellets exactly, and I cast out my 2 baits. Caught a nice chub immediately on the lower rod and as I unhooked it the other baitrunner went, so 'cos I had no keepnet and wanted a photo I left the unhooked chub in my landing net, landed the second chub in same net, weighed both (3-1 and 3-4) and set up the camera with both fish comfortable in the river in a large secured landing net.
The reason I wanted the photo was because the background is a bit special - some of the finest industrial architecture and landscape in Leeds, which if you're lucky you could even get a passing train bus or plane in the shot (or even by some chance all of the above!! - could make a real "stick that one in a frame" angling photo I reckon)..
Got the self-timer on the camera all set up before it (the camera) told me it had no memory card in (left it in this computer at home - DOH!!)
Anyway yeah the red bait c**ktail - "surf & turf" I'm gona call it - the chub seem to love it, had one more (2-5) on same c**ktail later, and think I had a run off a probable small barbel on it too, which threw the hook in a surface thrash after a very impressive sprint.
Not had any fish at all on plain pepperami yet. Or on these pellets on their own for that matter but this was the first time I've used them in decent conditions!

It's good to hear that the Aire is producing quality fish and the urban location has appeal too as long as it's safe (as possible). And the way this river is coming along makes me feel that the club should be looking to seccure more of it. There are some spectacular swims upstream of woodlesford behind our stretch of canal fishing. The amalgamation did have the rights here not so long ago and imo we ought to try get them back. Keep on plugging for a barbel nige,it might throw up a big surprise.
Regards Mick

My theory is that the reason the chub congregate & do well in the more urban areas of the Aire is that the cormorants, goosander, mink etc are out of control elsewhere. Especially around Woodlesford where you'll often see sh**loads of cormorants in a pylon or tree! (ironically most of the Aire below Bingley doesn't have much of an otter problem yet for obvious reasons) ** yes this is the actual official collective noun for cormorants

You're right about the cormorants Nige but I do think the river down there has massive potential and every session I have on the swale or nidd that produces a barbel blank makes me wonder what if.
My time on the bank is pretty limited of late so experimental sessions on waters without solid form is a no no for me. But I have no doubt in the future the aire downstream of the city will produce the kind of fish that keeps us driving north!

Have to agree with previous posts. It stays on the hook/hair well but never felt it got me an extra fish to spam/pellets etc.- in fact a second choice to those baits for me,
