That's excellent news, long overdue in my opinion. Presume this refers to designated trout waters? Fishing banned at say Ulleskelf.

Good news that rusty should solve a lot of old problems.

Fly and artificial lures includes spinning. I don't use a fly rod for that.

Sad that there'll be no idyllic Easter trouting trip to beautiful Middleham for us then like last year Shame cos the motivation to go that far was only really there for us between March 25th and June 15th. Got no fly gear and can't see us being able to afford any for a while.
Have loads been poaching then? Shame that they spoil it for other people.
I remember just seeing one fella taking the piss with 2 rods at Middleham last April in all the three days we were there, and we were up and down the whole length.

I agree Nige
a proper Trout, Grayling water and you can`t use worm what a stupid rule. what club would make up a rule like this
people can reply and say what they like !!!
I`ll just go further down stream on Bradford water instead (worms aloud or any other water they may own.

I see what your saying John but something had to be done about the out of season ledger fishing at the likes of topcliffe, maybe banning ledger fishing might have been the way to go, don't know but it is a shame we all have to suffer, used to love a bit of upstream worming meself, looks like it's the old fluff chucking from now on.

Johnboy, let's not forget that grayling have the same closed season as well. I think worm should be allowed where it is mostly trout, once you go further downstream and have a mix of coarse fish / grayling and trout, then that's when it gets a bit questionable. I think the EA rule is that where you fish a water during close season and start catching the unwanted species, you should move. ie, I fish the upper / middle tees in the winter for grayling, but if I start to bag a trout or two, I move swims.
Where you have a stretch that is predominantly coarse fish, then worm shouldn't be used during the close season in my opinion. I would definitely put topcliffe in this category - even if there is the odd trout there (I've fished the place for a few years occasionally, and have never caught a trout).
I suppose to avoid any argument or bending of the rules, a no worm rule was decided.

The weir pool has a good head of trout at topcliffe Jim so people have abused the system in the past witch has caused a lot bad feeling year after year at the beginning of the trout season so I can see why it has been done.

Perhaps there is, but like I said, I've had loads of chub and no trout yet. On other sections higher up, where I fish with steak, meat, worm etc I do catch trout as well as chub. Admittedly though I do fish the deeper pegs more.

Jimlad I understand what you said,
I can also understand about the swale at Topcliff, if I was going trout fishing I would choose a proper trout water ie: (Middleham)
so if I go to Topcliff with fly rod and flies and catch chub because it can be done am I in trouble (NO) because I`m fishing for trout. worm is a natural bait that trout have taken for as long as I`ve know
all I was trying to say surely the upper reaches of rivers where trout are worm should be allowed.
I will and always have followed the rules of fishing it`s just my opinion
JB.

It's a fair point, that jb and nige make, and maybe a slightly more complex solution is needed, but to stop barbel being targeted in the close season, so far so good! About time! Maybe some venue specific rules in the future? Pity to spoil it for the law abiding anglers!
Eddie.
