Been fishing in the dam at the side of wintersett today. It wasnt the best days fishing I have done i must confess. A guy fishing the carpark end caught 2 pike around the 8 lb mark, he was fishing live bait though. I had some dead baits, roach etc and had one take all day. Is this normal for this water. I was also fishing the carpark end on a pop up dead bait as the bottom is very weedy. The pike I had on was in it late teens in weight at a guess, when it came to the suface and shook out the trebles.
is there any known good spots for the pike on that lake? It is the 1st time fishing it and was slightly disappointed, feel am doing something wrong, any tips appreciated.
Regards Tom

My best tip for you Tom............ keep your gob shut, and get to know the guy's that are fishing the place. If you think it's stuffed with pike then I'll bet it is'nt, and the guys fishing it won't be happy that you are telling everybody it is.
The one you saw is most likely everyones PB.

Don't know how you can be 'slightly disappointed' at hooking a pike in the 'late teens'!

Tom If you are the person I think you are you were fishing without a day ticket. So you can't really moan about having a crap day when you were fishing for free!.

cnt believe that a lock has now been put on the gate, this make it so you cant get your car down and puts day ticket holders off. I has going to come fish this quite regular along with wintersett, but not if i have to leave the car out the way.
As for not having a day ticket I would have quite happily give you the money there and then for the price of a ticket, it is just the fact we didnt know you had to go to the costcutter.
My dad hasnt fished this water since the old bloke use to come round on his scooter and you paid on the bank.
We thought that this would still be the case and some one would come round and supply a ticket.
I know now you will have to become a member to get a key but, we wouldnt want to become a member just to fish this water as this is the only one we would fish from the leeds angling club.
I think it is very sad that you cant fish places now on a day ticket and feel your car etc will still be there when you get back.

when the gate was locked,i explained the reasons why, surely you don't expect day ticket anglers to be allowed a key.If you're serious about fishing the place, then get a yearbook and a key, there are plenty of people who buy the yearbook just for this water, even the much maligned immigrants managed to work it out from the yellow leeds signs that are on display. Its about 12 years since the old bloke took ticket money on the bank so thats not really much of an excuse anymore, although its the one we usually get from people who hope that nobody asks them[i'm not suggesting that you were trying to avoid paying].Most of the members who fish wintersett agree that its much better with the gates on now,remember,10 day tickets=£40,YEARBOOK £43,and all the other leeds venues to choose from in with that price.I agree,it's a shame that we have to lock the fisheries, but that's the way it is.

As for your immigrant friends who can't do no wrong, maybe you should ask him how he treated your beloved pike that he caught earlier in the day!!!!!!!! Or should I tell you, he deep hooked it and couldn't get the trebles out, SO HE HIT IT ON THE HEAD AND CHUCKED IT IN THE BOOT, consideration my arse. He told us he was down there all the time, you should watch them or you will have no pike left...... This is fact. Thats the one he thought we didnt see him do, the other he caught prior to that he knew we had seen him and that was deep hooked aswell, he just cut the line and left the hooks down inside it with wire trace hanging out of its mouth. 43 quid is cheap for him because he probably gets a couple of meals a week out of your res!

if you got yourself a yearbook you would be able to see that its not against the rules to remove pike from leeds waters, and by the way,hes not my friend,it aint my res,and they're not my beloved pike-in years gone by plenty of pike found their way into the frying pan at the local chip-ole and the place was a better balanced fishery then,so i'm not gonna worry about a few getting eaten by immigrants

I can't see why you're complaining about £43 for membership, Tom. It's a drop in the ocean in the scheme of things and as Ged said, you've got all of Leeds' other waters to fish too. Plus you'll be able to access the carpark and fish knowing your car is safe.
Bit of a no-brainer really...

I've fished wintersett for pike for many years, though not so often over the last 3-4. It's not good to see fish of any size taken for the table. Fishing on wintersett is difficult enough without reducing the amount of fish in it. If these poles want to catch fish to eat, then why don't they buy a fly rod and go to the many fly fisheries available. As for the deep hooking of pike, there a many more incompitent anglers who are trained in the art of deep hooking, lets not blame it all on the Poles.

Why would any pike angler want to give £40 to a club that clearly don't give a toss about pike welfare. Why are leeds allowed to run this water in such a manner do they own it? Is it really a club for match anglers that are quite pleased to see the pike getting killed?

If you lived in France as I now do you would know that £40 a year is a drop in the ocean. Here the annual license for this region is 86-Euro, annual membership for a private water is 350-euro or 35-euro a day. A day ticket on my local council owned lake is 10-euro and the fine for fishing without one is 20 times the cost of the day ticket 2,000-euro. Anglers here fish for pike and Zandra for the table but there is still plenty to be caught as there was in Yorkshire 50-years ago when any pike caught was knocked on the head, however big it was. In my opinion many fisheries would benefit by removing any small jacks under 12lb and the small ones make good eating. Go to any water where there is just one or two resident pike and they will be big fish.

Is it really a club for match anglers that are quite pleased to see the pike getting killed? I'me a part of that club and i care!! every post about mistreatment of pike usually refers to other pike anglers or eastern Europeans, but you twist it to have a pop at match anglers, whats it to do with matches? when was the last match on wintersett? every pike caught by me or seen caught on thousands of open matches go back alive, and any angler mistreating any fish would be dealt with. Pleasure anglers usualy only have their concience to stop them being killers, match anglers have someone 20yds either side of them, there are no prizes for single fish as a trophy or PB on a match, they leave all that to you lads. Wintersett " do we own it" No but we pay thousands a year rent to provide members with a large still water, and believe me without that rent, and the graft of gedthespread and the other bailiffs, it would be lost to angling and become another RSPB gain. Just as a small point Gus you might want to lower that 12lb removal bit, as that could swiftly remove all the male Pike required for spawning. Make it 7lb and under, and you could at least give the Pike a chance of a future. BOF
