What constitutes blanking ? Is it when you don't catch at all ? Is it when you dont catch what you set out to catch ? or something different ? This week my blanks have ranged through :- 1. Not catching at all - Swale. 2. Not catching what I set out to catch - Nidd. 3. Not catching what I set out to catch, but catching something so small I'm not sure if it should register as a non blank ? - Wharfe. This was last nights non blank ?

Well this time last year on the Aire I had a few trout sessions where I had to get through 30-40-50 minnows before I got a trout, and of course like everyone would, I thought I was blanking until the first trout, usually around dusk. Ditto Middleham last Spring, where even a large lobworm was gradually devoured by a hundred minnows and you'd eventually hook one that was smaller than the worm had been....
So I think we'd all agree that for us minnows definitely ALWAYS count as blanking, but then , have you ever googled "micro-fishing"? Daiwa even make specialist minnow rods for the Japanese market and the aficionados talk about their 'personal least' instead of 'personal best'.... so it really is all about what's the target species...
When targeting barbel/chub with a large piece of meat, I'd say a gudgeon counts as blanking too (Swale the other day, looked like I was gonna blank until switching to a slower-paced peg late on and landed a couple of half-decent chub)..
But then on the Nidd a few weeks back, again after chub/barbel, blanking until the last cast, I could tell that little fish were nibbling the meat and when I pulled it in I had a 2.5-inch baby barbel. Target species, but still a blank! Whereas for me, even a 3oz dace on that last castwouldn't have counted as blanking, and that size of chub you're showing there (5-6 inches?) is definitely not a blank for me !
Couple of times recently too jack pike have taken my barbel-targeted meat, and that's not blanking either cos the way I see it the pike drive other fish away, and the larger ones often bite through the line, so I do well to catch anything at all in that situation...
So errm, yeah, blanking is ....whatever you reckon it is on the day

I reckon blanking comes from match fishing, returning a blank match ticket, ie not catching any fish allowed in the match. So minnows don't count, everything else does, even pike (though no longer allowed in Leeds matches).
Eddie.

I can quiet easily suffer a blank whilst barbel fishing on the Derwent if I dont count foul hooked minnows and sucicidal footballers! I dont mind blanking as long as know one calls me a blanker or a thingy head!!!!!

Dave I know it's a blank, you know it's a blank, WE ALL KNOW IT'S A BLANK !!! Been checking through my records & I've noticed a lot of blanks around September ..........either I've usually gone off the boil by this period or am not concentrating my efforts in the right places. One year I had six blanks in eight trips (I must have been suicidal !!)
Stevo - I've tried a fair bit over the last few years to catch a Barbel from the Derwent - so a lot of my summer blanks are down to that - although I've not been since the last week of last season, so not to blame for this years blanking total !!! Cheers Andy

Andy I've noticed you've not blanked on the Ouse lately. Lets pencil that in for Tuesday and get it out of the way

Well after 3 more foul hooked minnows last night I've come to the conclusion that the minnows are all bored so get together in a group and play duffs !! (Do kids still do duffs or is it a Yorkshire thing ? ) I reckon they sit around the hook and Fred says to Bert " 'ere Bert, I Duff ya to put ya chin over this hook " And so they take it in turns for two minutes each until the inevitable happens after 45 minutes and whoooosh , the blanking angler reels in and Berts gone with a flash

I blanked on Wed at skipbridge 10-2 pre baited 3 swims 2 not fished before about 1/2 way up the horses field, couple of knocks on meat / meat been nibbled couple of knocks on corn / looked like they were just sucking at it nice 4 hours out tho.
ho and by the way first peg I fished after the big bend opposite the farm on the other side of the A 59, I name this peg the green fly peg nether seen so many. I at to do a sort of rain dance to knock then off all over my cloths, bag, rod holdall.

4 consecutive blanks now for me, target-species wise, equalling my longest lean spell of the summer - I've had the the odd chub, pike or gudgeon on some of those sessions, but no barbel landed ... I have however had barbel hook pulls at the end of the session, 2 sundays in a row.
I think I'd rather have a barbel hook pull than land any other non-target species, if you see what i mean.

Anyway Andy what type of pellet/squab is that in the original post? And is that what you've mostly been blanking on?

From memeory it was a sausage sizzle dumbell. I had a lot of success early on this season with lobworms - might have to revisit them !! But was getting pestered a bit too much by Perch & small stuff - although had some good ones up to 2 and half pound or so. Cheers Andy
