The world's your oyster jb,but don't go to thwaites mill alone. It's a shame that it's " not safe " on your own down at thwaites because I understand it's fishing well and there are reports of plenty of fish and some half decent Barbel coming out. I do call in now and again when I'm down that way and the last time I went one of the older members was fishing the pin and getting a fish a chuck , including a nice Barbel,of about 4 pound . . All on pound and a half bottom !! why what`s going on down there PM me if you prefer
JB.

JB I don't have any first hand experience of problems down there, but I have heard of people being hassled. And even though it's very local to me I would only go with a mate.

I know I don't pay full price for the book but its a shame when you can only fish 1/2 the places on a membership when you pay for the full that's offered.
I mostly fish on my own and have done for many years and have had no trouble at all, I`ve been to some places where your away from any help all tho you wouldn't see anyone let alone another Angler lol. not many of my fishing Angles are available or go to places I prefer when I go.

JB - Its not that you can't fish Thwaites , I think Mick is suggesting it might mot be wise to on your own due to it being frequented now and again by some unsavoury characters who might take great delight in seeing you flapping about in the river Aire trying to put your baseball cap and glasses back on while they help themselves to your sarnies When I went down a couple of week ago , the balsam was ten foot high and there was a pathway through to the three or four pegs that are there. To be quite honest it is a tip mate, beer cans, plastic bags, fires ........... you name it I would suggest you either ask Mick if you can borrow one of his reserve mates to go with our stick to Ulleskelf All the best Dave R

Good luck John. I'm back on the dark side but I think I will have my barbel rod bent and my centrepin singing with a few obliging pond pigs. Prawn & corn it's the future !

well had a go at ullaskelf yesterday that place as change in 20 years, didn't realises if I had found the right place or not. anyway found the entrance and walk towards the bridge checking every peg on the way the fog at this stage was just lifting, well I say every peg if that's what you call them, the decent peg that looked nice you couldn't fish because of the signs saying overhead cables.
so I set myself up just below the bridge the water had a nice decent flow on it,I got my 2 new rods out that someone had given me for nothing he`d given up fishing as he doesn't have time anymore, and because I`ve known him for years he new I would look after than. also put my 2 new shimano 4000 RB match reels on hoping for a late season Barbel or a decent Chub.
first rod went to the other side of the bank which ended sort of in the middle this rod was on solids - meat, corn or boilie but nothing came of it. the second rod went down the inside line on bronze maggot and maggot feeder ended up with 3 nice size Chubblets.
after about 4 hours I decided to walk back closer to the entrance for another 2 hours but nothing at all.
as I was up that end I decided to nip into church Fenton to see if I could still find the lake we own, as this is another place I`ve not been to for 20 years and found it with no problem.by-ek this place as changed so much when I first new of it the lake was full of trees and it was very difficult to walk round it as been opened up so much well done Leeds, might give this a go next year.
on the way back I dropped off at Easedike clamed over the wall got to the top of the hill and said under my breath (NO WAY) can`t remember that hill to the foot bridge well that's another place I`m not going to if I walk down that hill I be stopping down there because it would take me till dusk to get back up so I turned round and got back in my car.
so that was my day what was your day like JB.

JB I'll meet you for a go at Thwaites sometime if you like, especially next week or so when I'm not working. Only ever been once last winter and it didn't make me want to rush back (litter, remains of fires, pongy bushes, etc, and that was before they started to take half the island away which I always enjoyed walking along) but I'd like to see what they've done to the weir and would be happy to give it another go if you need a buddy.
Or instead I could show you some urban chub & barbel spots round Armley, which is more handy for me. I've only had chub so far but I'm not leaving them alone till I've had a barbel - seen 'em caught there (in fact last week I netted and weighed one 4 pound 2 ounce for a lad who said it was the biggest he's had, but his mate he said had had much bigger ones, and then sure enough he lost one that seemed better) ... so I know they are there. these 3 good spots are only 100 yards or so from parking place, but they all involve a bit of a steep scramble down rough slopes to get to the banks.
The chub fishing in Leeds city centre near the station can be good later on in winter too and that to me has always seemed very well lit once it gets dark and safe to go on me own.

3 decent chub from Armley to 3 pound 4 oz in a dusk till dark session today - a gratifying hat-trick which makes up for three blanks in a row on water that just wan't fishable. Today was perfect for chub, and maybe they are sayinjg "Laters barbus, this our season now."
The one other fish I had on, but which threw the hook after an impressive downstream sprint, felt like probably a small stockie barbel... I'm getting closer, and it might still happen in 2015, who knows .... but it's already been about 7 weeks since I landed a barbel now and I may have to resign myself to waiting till next year for my first Aire whiskers.
