Vic, great post Nothing like a bit of division amongst the membership to move the society forward . Is it 2007 or 1967, because I'm somewhat baffled that such a ridiculous comment can be made by a committee member when the society needs to be encouraging, not alienating, the membership (potential or existing).

Quite frankly, nothing much has changed over recent years, has it?

from our different styles of Fishing?

Its a Shame a Fishing Club with many miles of River,
offering Fish of differing species to specimen sizes,
doesn't seem to recognize the Anglers who buy
the Book just to fish the Rivers.

It seems that you are intimating that the other 4 options in the vote, don't get pleasure from their area of ANGLING.

If they do then surely, there should only be one box to tick.

A little lesson in diplomacy wouldn't go amiss, we have heard recently that the membership is on the up, i know quite a few SPECIALIST anglers that have returned to the fold this year, so have had an impact towards those growing numbers, please don't try to alienate them.

A simple oversite by Andy could lead to bickering again, if we let it, please lets not do that, we all want the club to go forward with all forms of angling supported.

Hi Guys,

There are dozens of different types of fishing, and, for the purpose of this poll, I am trying to fit to fit them into no more than 5 categories. This means the categories have to be fairly broad-based, and some types of fishing may not easily slot in to any category.

I welcome any suggestions as to how I can arrange the categories (without listing each type of fishing seperately), in such a way that everyone will be represented.

Totally agree with the previous message, i feel it will generate more questions than answers, the results being meaningless unless it is followed by a further poll.

hi guys, i think you have missed the point on what vic was saying so i will expand.
vic goes on all the leeds matches through the river season but he dose not like going on commercials through the close season,i for instance go 3 times a week at least on ponds, jim jordan our match sec plays bowls untill the 16th june and dose not go fishing at all,vic has been going on the aire and calder at rawcliffe bridge pleasure fishing and has had some realy good days ,15lbs of roach n skimmers most weeks, we have no matches there but he goes because he enjoys it which we all do or we wouldnt be reading this site in our spare time if we didnt,so get out fishing , make the most of your yearbook it lasts 365 days,a bit of fine tuning on the canal or one of our ponds/lakes is good therapy,the river season is nearly opon us ,i cant wait,tell us how you got on next week ,i will give you a report on skelf, and the ouse at red house/ popleton/beninbrough.stan..

Of course we all enjoy our angling; the point is not everyone wants to catch 10lb of bits. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking anyone who wants to, and is happy doing that.

The point is there are a good number of anglers who join the club to target the larger fish that inhabit the clubs rivers sections and stillwaters.There are also many more anglers of the same ilk who are potential members. What is the club doing to encourage them into the fold?

Sections on the Nidd, Derwent and Swale have gone from the clubs portfolio this year. To be replaced by what? 3 new section on the river Aire.With all the free fishing available on this river. How many new members do you think those acquisitions are going to pull in.?

Then we have the ongoing debate about finishing times on rivers. Have you actually approached any landowners or even discussed it as a committee..

I, as you do Stan want to see the club prosper. I think a little thought regarding ALL members at times, would go a long way.

Yes I found the categories on that poll a little strange as I am one of those that joined Leeds purely for the barbel on the rivers.

PS Stan "the ouse at red house/ popleton/beninbrough" - those are York DAA stretches!

due to work and family commitments,I am a once a week ,generallymatch fisherman.In the lighter months,I can also sneak an odd Friday evening session in.I hold York and Wakefield yearbooks mainly as a requirement to fish their matches.After a gap of acouple of years I ,and a friend have rejoined Leeds.This is mainly because of the aquisition of the Aire at Haddersley,so Jason,that is 2 extra year books for a start,also I suspect club booking fees,winter league fees could make the water self financing.whilst the society has problems with waters,I think the mix and diversity of waters is excellant.This season shall see me fishing (hopefully) well run,well attended matches,barbel and chub pleasure sessions,light duty carp fishing and good canal fishing

As a match angler you will be well catered for, and having my early fishing years dominated by that side of the sport I have no problem, what so ever with that.

The point is not every member of the club wishes to fish matches or wants to bag up on bits for a few ours on the evening.

There's room or at least there should be for everyone in the club.I'm just trying to point out a little thought and consideration for members other than the match lads, would be beneficial to the club.

And if you did join the club mainly because of the acquisition of the Aire at Haddersley.Then fair enough.But with quite a bit of free fishing in that area I personally don't believe there will be too many like you and your mate.

I am now a little confused, wasn't the night fishing situation cleared up, i seem to remember a post that someone wrote admitting that they regularly Night Fish, stating that "Good Members require few rules, they're only there for the idiots".

No commitee member posted a reply regarding that members activities, so that leads me to believe it is the case, therefore if i get caught doing the same, i will plead the GOOD member amendment.

After all the feedback regarding the latest poll, I have to agree that it is somewhat flawed and and will not properly represent all anglers. This poll has now been closed.

I've decided to change the poll categories to just 3, and follow it up with further polls to get a breakdown of opinions within each category. The 3 categories will be based on the following coarse fishing definitions (Which, hopefully, can include everyone),


Specialist (or Specimen) fishing -- Where the angler is someone who devotes their time to pursuing, usually, large fish of a particular species.

Match fishing -- Where the angler is someone who takes part in organised competitive fishing where anglers compete with each other to catch the highest total weight within a given time.

Pleasure fishing -- Where the angler is considered not to take the sport too seriously and who fishes on an ad-hoc basis. They fish for any species/size of fish. (Please note: "Pleasure fishing" does NOT imply that anglers in the other categories do not get pleasure out of fishing!!!


If I don't hear too many objections I'll start the poll in a couple of days.
