As there are no threads in this category I thought I would start one. Whilst we have plenty of specimen river venues for most species big river Roach are scarce. I have always wanted my PB Roach to come from a river and have always felt we were light on river venues for the species, not just on the clubs waters but county wide.
My own PB was an accidental capture caught whist barbel fishing on the Swale ( 1lb15oz)
I don't expect or want peg details as I feel that actually spoils fishing for all of us but I would be really interested in discussing the subject on line. In exchange I will be happy to point any one in the right direction for other species if I can.

Wish i could help you nightline,
But alas Big River Roach are as scarce as the Derwent Barbel, the last big Roach i heard of were on the Nidd, but i am sure there will be pockets of them on most of our Rivers, but not many anglers are fishing using the methods or at the right times likely to fluke a fish that gets the grapevine rolling.
Kev
I have more detail regarding the Nidd Fish, if you want it.

Hi, I read in the news section that a guy had been catching some nice roach on the canal near Thwaite Mills. The picture shows he had caught quite a few in just a few hours.

Thanks for that pixiguru but I really want to catch from a river however I have never dismissed canals for specimen fish, in fact If ever I were to target big Eels (unlikely) It would be on a canal.
I think I know the venue you speak of Kev and I agree with everything you say. With regard to Derwent Barbel the river does enjoy that reputation but is by no means the hardest to capture a double from, which is the earlier river mentioned. You may have already been successful but if not I may be able to point you toward a derwent fish.

hi nightline, once had one 2lbs 8oz on a match at dunsforth, had 5 2lb +one day at hammerton in the trout season,i think these fish migrated out of the ouse every year so they are prob not about any more, tony h had 7 one day at knotsford on the pole, we went back a week later and babs got 1 very near 3lbs could have touched 3 even, thats the biggest true roach i have seen but i once had one at boro 4lbs + i thought it was a bream at first but it went bananas at the net ,when i got it out it had red eyes very big and a very dark, old fish prob part bream 10% maybe but couldnt find any one with any scales, that was part of a 80lbs catch, dont think we will see those days again..stan..

sounds like `all our yesterdays`same scenario as the barble debate, if the really big roach were still there dont you think an odd one would get caught by accident.

What do you think Frim? I would be the first to admit to not being an ace with the roach but that was a little harsh.
Perhaps we ought to make it four men in a boat, at least with Stan in it as well, It would be a sure fire way of getting rid of the boat, It is not noted for shallows at Widdy.

Surely you mean portly on the port side.
However before any of you do it for me, I feel it is necessary for me to point out that I have no room to talk in that department.

i know you are all talking roach at the mo' but i would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction for those barbel that have been mentioned. i have just returned to fishing after a 15 year lay off, topcliffe used to be best chance for a big 'un with most of swale, nidd, and wharfe capable off producing a few decent fish, but as i say i have not been for a while so i would be grateful for any up to date info and i will let you know if i fluke any of them big roach you talking about.
