i've been down there the last couple of weeks and after talking to some of the lads about nimber of fish lost it shocked me and also scares me as this can be no good for the fish people trying to drag them through the weed or pulling for a break would anyone be interested in getting a work party togrether and clearing some of the weed once it starts to really come in the next few weeks.Even aftre the big freeze we have had the weed is still thick in some spots and is only going to get worse and i for one am not going to be responsible for the damage of any fish or worse still the death. Some lads told a freind of mine that it was not a problem getting them out most of the time as we are using 40lb braid and that to me is just plain stupid. I know there are some who want the weed to stay but i'm only talking about a corner or a couple of swims as channels are no good as the fish once hook will just dart for the weed sorry for the rant

I've been down there for the last couple of Saturdays. there was no-one fishing this Saturday, only 4 on last weekend. I'm not too sure who has been telling you about all the lost fished, but as far as I'm aware the fish losses haven't been massive.
The people that are using 40lb braid to "drag" the fish in should be banned. Yes, the weed can get up in the summer, but as long as it's fished correctly I don't see it being a problem.
However, I am happy to help with a working party. You'll need to get approval from Chris. As he normally organises these.

are the club going to rope the pads off this year ?? there used to be a rope from the beggining of the pads to the island preventing people from fishing in the middle of the pads in summer woke up twice now to see people casting over all them lillys to the middle of the swamp as for the weed it doesent seem as bad these past few years 1 year the only part of the lake you could fish was the eastbank and if it was weed free and easy then it would probaly be more packed on a weekend than it is now .... so bring on the weed

That's a really valid point about "roping" off the pads. I think people that try to catch by fishing over the top of them are stupid and will do anything to catch.

as for lost fish i'm only going on what has been told to me by some of the lads who where on last week and the problem with the weed is the lads who start carp fishing go down to the lake as its a club water and just chuck in the middle of the weed because they have seen someone doing it on one of the carp videos that are about. maybe you lads who are on thereare not such anglers but every club has em and it only takes one to kill a fish there is a post on here some where of a 30 being found dead with a gob full of leadcore and a lad just told me last week that he had one last year with leadcore and a 5oz gripper still in the clip There is a company in leeds that sells dye you can put in and colours the water otley club used it on there pond but thats on the club

I agree with what you are saying about "numpty", careless anglers. But there'll still be there whether there was weed or not. They'd probably end up fishing tight to the pads and lose or tether fish that way.
The "30" that was found dead two years ago, did have leadcore in its mouth...quite a lot of it attached to braid, plus another rig. this is down to poor angling not weed. I agree that the weed may have contributed, but I've had fish take me in to weed beds, but I know hand on heart my rigs are as safe as can be.
There is no point in trying to organise a party to aid the weed yet, as it hasn't got bad enough. See how you get on for the next couple of months.
It'd be good to put a name to a face. PM me when you're next on and I'll try to get donw.

Stop fishing rigs and start thinking carp. You can know all the best "rigs" in the world, but they don't work unless you have a brain. Think like a fish Difficult I know for some off you, but you should be able to get there eventualy, after all you can dress yourselves in a morning? Not seen a carp do that..............yet!

Wrighty, The dye you mention is Dyofix Pond Blue it was first produced as an algae inhibitor but has since been found to stop weed growth as well due to the colour blocking out uv light, its a recognised food industry dye and perfectly safe for both fish and insect life. They also claim the colour can help against predation from cormorants. Myself and Dave Bonsels (fisheries managment) are making enquires with the company and will post our findings. Steve

As regards roping off the pads, I'd just like to mention that for some of us angling doesn't begin and end with carp. I occasionally float fish the area for tench and do not wish to have my pleasure curbed because of the incompetence of some carp anglers.
Steve, sorry to disagree with you again mate, but the day we start putting blue dye into natural fisheries (I don't care what they do on commercials) is the day I give up. Surely less weed growth = less cover = more predation from cormorants?

Dave nothing to disagree about mate, I just answered the dye comment to let members know that we are aware of the product and it's claims, we were approached by the company in late 2006 to supply a lake for testing "we didnt take up the offer" but we do try to keep up with different kinds of treatments if we intend to use them or not.
