I think this is worth a new thread. After reading and answering pm's, posts, text's and phone calls, I took it on myself to have a chat on the bank with a few of the regulars and bailiffs regarding the future of the Knotford site, i put everything together "good and bad" for last nights Fisheries Management meeting, it turned into one of the best meetings i have attended. The proposals are, 1- A questionnaire be sent to all night permit holders "it will be made available to other members on request" 2- The autumn DYO-"FIX"be canceled 3- Stocking be canceled for at least 2yrs. 4- That money be made available to secure site, this will involve removing tyre barrier, clearing access, new lockable gates, re-surfacing drive and car park. Other points were raised like signs, notice boards etc but there content will depend on if my notice of motion to the AGM that we make Knotford yearbook holders only is accepted. The work on the east bank to reclaim the existing pond is nearly finished, it will be seeded and then re planted, only on site plants will be used, unless someone has other ideas! No decision has been made on how we will use the pond yet, but it will not be a commercial or pegged out pond.
I was surprised and pleased the meeting generally accepted that the lake should be left alone, and trying to turn it into something that it doesn't want to be wont work, lets hope the answers we get back can take the fishery forward. Steve

Top stuff Frim As far as your new small pond onsite go's I havent seen it so I am in no position to comment. But if it is a new hole with no plants established then I would try to get plants with floating leaves established first, things like water fringe, water hawthorn and lillys. Be carefull with cabage (brandybottle/yellow waterlilly) It can be very invasive if your pond is shallow. Water fringe and hawthorn are very snapable against fishing line, lillys not so but they are slow growing and manageable as they dont like deep water. (wade in and cut the corm type stuff) Cabage has a tendancy to raft, the tubers (upto 8"+ thick, even thicker on one scotish loch i know) will spread into open water if conditions are good. Let the soft "weeds" make there own way to start with, then manage. I would go for potomageton before canadian given the choise. I would'nt be too keen to stock fish for a year or too, let it find it's self for more than one winter, then you will know whats working plant wise. Putting fish into the mix too soon will just complicate the results and mess with the plants. Sounds boring I know, but better to know it's limits than throw money at something you are not sure will work as a place an angler will find usefull. You may make a swamp if you rush things. Take your time, watch and learn, dont be in a rush for a net full, it would only be tempory at best. I realy hope you make a go of this, my hat is off to you Frim Good luck mate

Think the proposals are excellent but there is no mention about public access.
I have fished the east bank all year and have had to clear dog excrement on more than one occasion before setting up. Although most walkers are decent and stop for a chat they all tend to let their dogs off leads which always make a b line for the inside of your bivvy and your boilies. Does the club have the right to ban access to the public which although does seem a little harsh, especially to the people that have walked on there for years, but my experience is fishing and the public do not go together.
Also the other Sunday filled a bin liner with rubbish from the car park only to arrive the following Friday to find a load more bottles and Kebab wrappers left there so the gate can't come soon enough.

Frim The planned work above sounds great... am also hearing of changes that are planned for the lake in relation to rules. One thing i have found difficult this year is that some anglers do very long sessions - sometimes even a whole week. The lake has got very busy this year & i think it's something the club should think about in terms of the rules & length of stay. Areas of the lake are effectively unavailable at certain points of the year. Glad to hear no more stock is to be introduced also

The gates etc are priced up and hopefully will be sorted this winter, its too late for rule changes this year regarding lengths of stay but i think the bailiffs should have a bit more power to overcome people taking the p*** If anyone has had a look at Grahams post about rule changes, what do you think about the baitboat proposal for Wintersett? could Knotford be next?

bait boats on knotford are unnecsary (excuse spelling). They will cause a big problem both to other anglers and to the fishes welfare

Paul, The finances for the fence at polo have been ok'd the only thing holding things up is the planners, it seems anything you do around kippax seems to be a problem with them, but as soon as we get the green light it will be go. The gates at Knotford dont need planning so could start as soon as the drive way and ironworks have been ripped up. Steve

most places that allow baitboat on will only let you use them as far has you can cast a marker float.. this idear does work...the marker must go out everytime before you use your boat..anybody taking the piss going past the maker should get reported.

by not allowing them you don't create a problem/situation that needs monitoring or policing. If you can only send it out far as you can cast whats the point

I agree about public access and about the dog walking issues raised. As much as we all love mans best friend, some of the regular dog walkers dogs at knotford are not the best of trained! As for bait boats, I dont think they are really needed. most of the features are less than 80m. With moden rods these days who needs a bait boat! I dont really think knotfords that busy either. the most I have seen this year is 16 and a day ticket.. tell me if I'm wrong but isnt there 30 swims! I agree with Steve, bailiffs should have MORE POWER!! LOL..

Can anyone shed any light on the shelled reptile that has been seen on the tree line of both sides of the spit. I thourght it was a frog or maybe a toad getting hit by a crocc but then someone pointed out this creature (slightly rippled with a flat underside) perched on the lower branches of an over hanging bush. Where did it come from? How long has it been in the lake? Should it be cap tured and rehomed with more of its own kind? How big will it grow? And is it true they carry semolina? Maybe I should ask these questions on the specimens who knows what section! Someone please tell me... ...
