Just wondering what people's thoughts are on this as a barbel/chub bait ?
On some of the barbel sites I browse it seems to be the holy grail of meats. Anglers are buying it in bulk when and where it becomes available.
Is it better than meat you flavour yourself or not ? I haven't come across a supermarket that stocks it yet so I stick to my own secret flavourings.

Mick. haven't used it meself, but it's interesting that they're paying a premium for something they could easily do themselves for about 5 pence. Maybe they just never cook with garlic and don't have it in the house? We use garlic most days, and I have done meself ever since I left home really 30 years ago - me mum, who's not a fan, reckons it's why I was single for a long time - so I'm well aware that it's a flavour that will make its way into everything it touches. I must remember to put a few penceworth of garlic puree in the meat tin overnight before fishing next time, and I'll let you know how I do.

First saw garlic sausage being used a good few years ago at Raker lakes shortly after It opened and It proved to be an awesome bait not just for carp. If you go to your local super market deli counter and ask them to cut you a suitable thickness slice from a full sausage {there about 3.5 inch In diameter so you should get a slice cut about half an inch to three quarters of an inch thick. Use a meat punch to punch out your hook baits the advantage of the garlic sausage over garlic spam Is its much tougher and stays on a hair very well ideally you want the extra strong variety.

for those that do wish to buy it, tesco and sainsbury both sell the garlic spam , bigger stores anyway Thanks ajk , I've been looking for it for a while now. I also used the black pepper spam quite successfully last year and they stopped stocking that at Tesco but found some in Asda. It's difficult to judge whether it's effective or not unless you catch a lot of fish on it and then change to the plain stuff and see if the fish keep coming. Even then the flavoured stuff might have got them in the mood to take the normal stuff. Like a lot of things in fishing I believe it is what you are confident in. I've caught lots of fish on the black pepper so that's what I always use

My local tesco doesn't have it but I like my own flavours on plain spam, although I will be having some black pepper flavour 'cos if it's good enough for Dave it's good enough for me.
He knows his onions that man !

Never used it, though I have seen it at the supermarket often enough. I used to use bacon grill and tried pepperami, but in the end co op's own brand luncheon meat is what has work best for me. No extra flavours or additives, just the way it comes out of the tin. Good smell, good texture and importantly it sinks! Not all brands do, so beware.
One of the principles I adopted in fishing years ago, and try to stick to, is to keep things simple, so I don't tend to add flavours to bait that already has it's own character and scent. Saying all that in very coloured water the smellier a bait is the better, chub certainly liked pepperami in those conditions and that is quite spicy and garlicky.

Plain meat is a interesting point Eddie I haven't used plain meat for ages , always adding some kind of flavour to give it a bit of extra pulling power. Perhaps thats just over egging the omelette I don't know. Next time I'm onto some barbel I'll give it a go.

I wouldn't head to a flooded river without the it, there was one a few years back called "stinky French" garlic spam, I think done with some connection to monty pithon's "Spamalot" this was much better than the stuf you get now. The new ones still worth a try though.

The Black Pepper Spam is the one in all the pound shops at the moment (not sure how much it costs though) That's tomorrow's shopping trip, sorted out then. I know Craig Avinbarbel wouldn't be seen on the bank without his Mattesons sausage . . . If you cast out with it on the hook and you feel confident . . . Stick with it I actually tried mussels on the Nidd at Cowthorpe last week , brilliant cast right under the willow , sure I would get a wrap round . . . Nothing ....... Won't be using them again

While you are dreaming about green coloured buoys I will be dreaming about how to net a 4 pound Barbel in a two foot of water with a seven knot current

No more talk of green coloured bouys ! The place is devoid of fish , think the ee's have taken them all or maybe the otters.
All that seems to be left now is one 1/2 pound perch.
&loo#y fishing.
