Does anyone have much success with oversized baits when barbeling ? I've read loads of articles on the subject but never given it a go. I'm talking big meatballs , big pellets and 1/3 rd tins of meat. Your thoughts please.
Mick.

About two thirds of the fish I've had this season have been caught on 15mm boilies. The other third on meat usually about 25mm irregular shaped pieces, never tried really big lumps!

Never had much success with sweetcorn, but like Eddie I use what I consider to be a barbel sized bait when using meat, boilies and pellets. Next time out I'm taking some large meatballs to try and will also try bigger pellets fished in pairs wrapped in paste.
Catching a modest eel on a hair rigged 15mm ish piece of luncheon meat convinced me that fish can engulf big baits. (The eel had the hook well down by the way).

Mick I've been using bigger than normal pieces of meat recently to good effect. I take a normal size tin , cut it down the middle both ways to give me 4 strips of meat. I then break each strip by hand ( to give a ragged edge ) into 3 pieces. So I'm getting 12 pieces to a tin. I've had Barbel as small as 2 lb on these sizes and I must admit I thought at the time " how did that get it in its mouth !! " They must be able to open their mouths wider than we think ? When I was down on the Trent earlier this season I actually put a third of a tin on one rod for two hours but didn't get a bite . . Must admit , I didn't feel overly confident I would Mind you , I suppose if you do get a fish on it , it's gunna be a big un

I`ve caught more Barbel and chub on sweet corn than meat, I`ve been told sweet corn is a all year round bait and it works for me. in my younger days I put 3 straight on a size 8 hook, now I do 3 on a hair rig both work.

Sweetcorn's a good bait but I'm always worried that the small stuff has ripped it off the hair. But as the rivers cool it is possibly more likely to be taken than a huge lump of fatty meat!
Until we get the first frosts I will still experiment with larger baits although I have been struggling to get out on the rivers this season. My river fishing buddy is off the radar so I will be fishing with my reserve mate who likes the commercials,so let's see how big a bait these greedy pond pigs can get down.

I often used sweet corn over hemp and it was quite successful for barbel. I caught the occasional nice roach too, which I didn't mind, but when (at topcliffe) I started catching a lot of suicidal trout, the barbel weren't getting a chance to take it. That's one reason I fish boilie a lot of the time, it's selective. But I suppose that is what's behind the big bait theory anyway!

No second reserve to fall back on Dave and I feel obliged to fish with this guy 'coz he's my pupil lol. So over to the dark side for me this week. It's a shame really because my back up plan was a afternoon roving skip bridge with one rod and a bag of big baits, not my usual armchair and slippers bait and wait routine. Plenty of time left for the rivers though.
