I've just joined Leeds ASA. Does anyone on here actually carp fish Wintersett? I've been walking round the bank recently just looking/feature finding (havent actually cast a bait yet) and I've never seen another angler, not even any pikers! I'm a bit worried that this means there aren't many carp in there.... If anyone has carp fished it anytips? Chris

theres a few regulars who keep coming back and having a go,its a hard water and some of the regulars may only do 5 or 6 sessions each year, while others may do one night a week.this year has been the worst ever with only 7 fish out,we think it may be down to the weedkiller put in by sailing club[even effecting reedbeds!]as for number of fish~reckon round about 50,give or take a couple.Theres 90 acres of water, most of which cannot be reached by casting alone, but the fish are sometimes caught at reasonable range if you can find them. They dont show much so are hard to find. You wont see many anglers at this time of year, its hard enough to catch in summer so winter is almost impossible,if you fancy a go wait til mid april to cast a bait, make sure its good quality and get ready for a long wait, unless you're jammy enough to just drop on an odd fish[it has been known],i'm afraid the harsh reality is that you'll be lucky to get a run just like the rest of us[unless you fancy yourself as a bit of a maestro in carp fishing]If you do get one,it could be one of the best fish you'll ever see[not always the biggest tho] but theres some proper nice old fish, and cos they're hard to catch,a wintersett fish is worth more than any other you'll find local.Put the time and effort in and you might get lucky, but it might just kick yer ass,so be prepared!

caschris, assume by your lack of response that my reply has put you off carp fishing on wintersett!

never mind carp, any fish seems hard to catch these days (big lake)

got to agree with you on that one,rs.Maybe if the weed recovers this year, the fishing will improve, and its about time them big roach started to reappear,as they've been absent for about 5 years now.

Lol sorry Ged that was a great reply. I am going to fish it this summer I think, well split my time between here and another water near cas and maybe Knotford. Problem is i'm not used to fishing such long distances but I guess i'll find out this summer PM me when you get back on it if you want a Wintersett buddy im fairly local so am going to try to regularly fish short midweek overnighters. I've got a good bait I use for most waters so going to stick with it here too. Have you got any experience in any of the waters next to it Cold Heindley and Botany?

i know some old blokes who fish it about 2-3 times a week over the springtime. They wickled out about 4 fish in all that time all over 30. But its hard. Half moon most popular bank

they must have been pulling yer plonker mate, nobodies had 4 thirties out of wintersett,at least not within last few years, theres only ever been 1 or 2 thirties in at any one time, except one year when there were about 5,mostly scrapers which have been caught since well down in weight.Theres only one genuine thirty[halftail]which has been over 30 pounds for a few years, the rest fluctuate, depending on available food supplies. This is only my opinion, and would be happy to hear from any of the other regular carpers on the subject.

Is anyone willing to divulge the approximate stock of Wintersett?
I think we've roughly established that one fish is a regular "30", but what about anything else.
I wouldn't mind giving it a bash once I've finished on Knotford
PM me if you'd prefer to keep it on the QT
cheers

there not mate. Seen the photos, they put there time in on there.
No one really knows what in there, most folk fish the half moon for the carp. the place is so large, other places never see anglers any more.
When i use to go regular 20 years ago for bream, the place would be full all around the half moon, ud get a few on the boat house side. Then the d**n wall would alos get a few on.

depends what you mean when you say '4 fish, all over 30'.Do you mean they both caught 4 fish between them, over a year,or one of them caught 4 and one caught nowt, did they manage to catch 4 fish, all over 30,without catching any 20 pounders.Dont want to sound pedantic'but the claims are a bit strong. There were 2 lads who spent a year on there and i think they had 3 or 4 thirties over the year, but they had smaller fish between,as i said before-no one single person has ever had 4 thirties in a year.

I have only fished the big lake twice, over 20 years ago,the first time I caught a bream a tench and afew decent roach and perch on the feeder, the second time just a few perch. If I went back around May time, and did the same thing(cast a gb feeder to the horizon)what would be my chances of catching some fish?just fishing the 9 to 5 hours or maybe an evening session, are there some bites to be had?

the way its fished lately you be lucky to get a bite, but to be honest, the only people to fish it thelast few years have been carpers and the odd tench angler. There hasn't been many anglers to try the conventional approach. One of my old mates from ryhill used to fish it properly, his approach was to pick a peg on the wind ward edge, probably in one of the bays, bait up for a couple of weeks-two or three nights a week, then start fishing the same times, adding on a saturday and sunday session-after a few blanks[this is when most anglers give in] he would start picking up a few fish, and do alright until word gets round, then the swimjumpers would move in and bugger it up.Results were always better with wind in yer face and colour in the water, quality bait and better than average angling skills with accurate casting help also.Would be interesting to see some proper fishing done again on here, might get the feeder rods out and have a crack meself!
